World Belly Dance Day, held the second Saturday in May, is a day when dancers around the world unite to:

• celebrate their love of belly dance;
• promote belly dance as an art form, a cultural activity, a sport, and family-friendly entertainment;
• demonstrate their generosity by donating profits from World Belly Dance Day events to charities.

The purpose of RAK 2011 is to raise awareness in Korea for the art of bellydance, and selected charities. RAK 2011 also gives Korea-based dancers of all levels, beginners through professionals, the opportunity to come together and celebrate their love of belly dance.

Dancers and volunteers participating in RAK 2011 are donating their time and talent, and will not receive any money from this event. All profits from RAK 2011 will be donated to Korean women's charities.

This is an opportunity for amateur dancers and students to perform on stage for family and friends, as well as a chance for the general public to experience a variety of bellydance styles and get a taste of what bellydance is all about. An interactive demonstration will be held during the show.

It’s been 24 years since the Korean Women’s Association United (KWAU) stepped out into the world holding the flag of the Women’s Rights Movement in February 1987. The lives of women have changed since then as has Korean society. KWAU and its 27 member organizations have had significant success in bringing to light and resolving social injustices.

KWAU has played a key role in establishing three women’s human rights laws to protect women’s rights and combat sexual violence, domestic violence, and prostitution. We have also helped to amend the Child Care Act and the Gender Equality in Employment Act which prevents discrimination against women in the workplace. KWAU played a role in abolishing the Hoju system (which is the patriarchal household system which determines the father to be the head of the family) and helped establish a new family registration law. Furthermore, KWAU has helped bring about legislation in the form of the Gender Quota System for National Assembly members in order to enlarge the participation of women in the field of politics and economics.

This was only possible because of the contributions and loving criticism of our dear supporters.

Now a new challenge is waiting ahead of us. KWAU has built up a new era of gender equality for women over the last 24 years. Yet we have still not reached the turning point marking true gender equality.

In addition, the values and philosophy of Neoliberalism are now prevalent. The peace and fairness promoted in the community values that the Women’s Movement emphasizes have been hustled out, and in their place infinite competition, materialism, discrimination, violence have become widespread. A large portion of women are forced to stay at home and to do housework rather than being able to pursue a professional career. Even if they do find paid employment, the jobs are almost always part-time or informal. Despite the phenomenon of the “New Wave of Women” which has newly arisen with the improvement in gender-equalized employment, only professional vocations offer equal opportunities. For this reason, the New Wave of Women is best understood as new opportunities limited to particular vocational fields. However, despite the limited effects these changes have offered to women in reality, a negative counter trend has arisen to challenge women’s newly acquired status. For instance, the revival of the Preference Point System for Military Service, which was found unconstitutional in 1999, is a negative result of the interpretation that the New Wave of Women has been too successful.

As we face these challenges, KWAU would like to develop an equal and shared vision based on our core values, stepping forward to meet tomorrow’s challenges together as companions. We will pursue unity through diversity and strive to achieve:

• A world that has no discrimination and violence toward women, that tears down the fence of gendered division of labor
• A happy world where social and economic disparities have been resolved, and work and welfare is guaranteed for all
• A world that recognizes the value of care and socializes the costs of family care
• A sustainable world where humans and nature can coexist
• A peaceful and united world free from war and conflict

  We will endeavor to work with you and support you to be a main character as together we make this new world. Every person who takes part in the process will be a creator, playing an integral part in this transformation.

   

  
  In April 1991, women aiming to create a society free from sexual violence gathered to establish the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center (KSVRC). As Korea’s first specialized sexual violence counseling center, KSVRC not only offers a variety of counseling services, but also provides sexual violence prevention education to the public and informs public policy on sexual violence issues. KSVRC ultimately aims to create a gender-equal culture.

  ★ RAK 2011 Organiser ★

  Belynda Azhaar is the sole organiser of RAK 2011. She has been organising World Bellydance Day events since 2009, and is known and respected within the expat community for her successful and well-organised fundraiser events.

  For World Belly Dance Day 2010 Belynda wanted to highlight and promote bellydance within the performing arts. She created RAK 2010 (Raising Awareness in Korea 2010); a fundraiser event involving more than 70 artists and volunteers, and showcasing a variety of acts including comedy, dance, spoken word, music, and theater. RAK 2010 raised awareness and funds for two local charities: Bear Necessity Korea, and Dasi Hamkke Center. RAK 2010 volunteers and audience consisted mostly of expatriates.

  To celebrate World Belly Dance Day in 2011 Belynda wished to unite the Korean bellydance community, and promote charitable behaviour amongst Koreans; RAK 2011 is the realisation of that dream. Some of the best professional dancers in Korea will come together to celebrate World Belly Dance Day 2011, and raise funds for local Korean women's charities. This is the first time such an event, involving many Korean dancers from various schools, has been held in Korea.

  Belynda would like to take this opportunity to thank all the artists, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters involved with RAK 2011 for their generosity. Without you, events like this would not exist. In particular, we would like to thank Oriental House for providing the theatre free-of-charge for this event. Thank you.

여성연합 홈페이지를 방문해주신 여러분 반갑습니다.

1987년 2월 긴 어둠을 헤치고 여성운동의 깃발을 들고 세상에 나온 지 20년이 지났습니다.

그 동안 우리 사회도 많이 변했지만 여성의 삶도 많이 달라졌습니다.

여성연합은 전국 6개 지부, 27개 회원단체와 함께 성평등 문제를 사회 한복판으로 끌어내어 많은 성과를 거두었습니다.

여성인권 3법이라고 할 수 있는 성폭력특별법, 가정폭력방지법, 성매매방지법 제정을 주도했고, 일과 가정을 양립하고 우리 자녀를 안심하고 키울 수 있는 영유아보육법 제ㆍ개정, 일하는 여성의 고용차별 해소와 모성보호비용의 사회분담화를 위해 남녀고용평등법 개정을 이루어 냈습니다. 또한 가족내 성차별을 해소하기 위해 호주제를 폐지하고 새로운 신분등록법을 제정하는데 큰 역할을 담당했습니다. 이 뿐 아니라 정치ㆍ경제 분야에서 여성의 참여를 확대하기 위해 여성할당제를 제도화하여 여성의 정책권한척도를 높이는데도 기여해 왔습니다.

이런 변화를 만들어내기까지 여성연합에 관심을 갖고 적극적인 참여와 애정어린 비판을 해주신 많은 분들이 있었기에 가능한 일이었습니다. 진심으로 감사드립니다.

이제 우리 앞에는 새로운 도전이 기다리고 있습니다. 지난 20년간 여성연합이 황무지에서 변화의 시나리오를 만들어 성평등사회로 가는 길을 열어왔지만 아직 전환점에 도달하지 못했습니다.

더구나 우리 앞에는 신자유주의 가치와 방식이 판을 치고 있습니다. 여성운동이 지향해 온 평등ㆍ평화ㆍ공동체 가치는 밀려나고 무한경쟁과 시장만능주의, 폭력과 차별이 일상화되고 있습니다. 대다수 여성들은 경제활동을 하고 싶어도 가족내 돌봄을 담당하느라 집에 있어야 하고 일자리가 있어도 전문ㆍ기술직 일부를 제외하면 대부분 비정규ㆍ비공식 일자리입니다. 요즘 ‘여풍’시대가 왔다지만 이는 기회의 평등이 주어지는 전문직종에서 생기는 현상입니다. ‘여풍’은 상징에 불과한데 이를 일반화하는 착시현상을 일으켜 반동의 흐름이 조성되고 있습니다. 1999년 위헌 판결이 난 군가산점을 부활시키려는 움직임이 바로 그런 예입니다.

이런 도전을 직면한 여성연합은 20년 전 여성연합을 창립했을 때 가졌던 첫 마음을 떠올리면서 평등ㆍ나눔ㆍ소통을 핵심가치로 ‘여럿이 함께’가는 운동방식과 ‘和而不同’하는 연대방식으로 활동하고자 합니다.

• 여성에 대한 모든 차별과 폭력이 사라지고, 고정화된 성역할 분업의 경계를 허무는 성평등 사회
• 사회ㆍ경제적 양극화가 해소되고 일자리와 복지가 보장되는 행복한 사회
• 가족 내 돌봄을 사회화하고 돌봄의 가치가 인정받는 돌봄사회
• 사람과 자연이 상생할 수 있는 지속가능한 사회
• 전쟁과 갈등이 사라지는 평화, 통일사회를

  만드는 과정에 여러분이 주인공이 되도록 지원하고 함께 나가도록 노력하겠습니다. 이 과정에 참여하신 모든 분들은 놀라운 변화를 만들어내는 창조자가 될 것입니다. 모든 분들의 행복과 건강을 기원합니다.

  안녕하십니까? 벨린다임니다. 반갑습니다 ...

  여러분과 같은 관대한 참여자들이 없었다면 “RAK 2011 - 월드 벨리댄스 데이 자선행사” 는 가능하지 않았을 것입니다. 이 행사에 참여해주시고 지지해주셔서 다시 한번 정말로 감사 드립니다.

  이번 행사는 전적으로 저 혼자서 준비(조직)하였습니다. 번역을 제외한 모든 준비, 그래픽 디자인, 웹 디자인, 광고, 홍보는 모두 단독 진행한 것입니다.

  저는 프리랜서 아티스트로서 한국의 어떤 댄스단체와도 특별한 관련이 없습니다.

  이번 모금 행사는 세계에게 한국의 댄서들이 얼마나 관대한지, 좋은 행동을 위해 함께 연합할 수 있는지를 보여줄 것입니다. (RAK 2011 는 월드벨리댄스데이 공식 웹싸이트에 보고될 것입니다: http://www.worldbellydanceday.com ) 저는 RAK 2011 행사에 참여하시는 모든 댄서들이 프로답게 참여해주실 것을 믿고 있습니다. 월드벨리댄스데이는 과거의 불화를 잊는 시간으로 모든 댄서들이 함께 모여 벨리댄스에 대한 사랑을 일반 대중들과, 그리고 친구 댄서들과 함께 나누고 축하하는 날입니다.

  RAK 2011는 자선 행사입니다. 공연자들과 강사들은 자신들의 시간과 재능을 이 행사에 기부하게 됩니다. 다른 댄서들과 일반 대중은 공연와 워크샵에 참여함으로써 그들의 돈을 기부하게 됩니다. 공연과 워크샵의 가격은 한국에서 진행되어 왔던 벨리댄스 공연/워크샵의 가격과 동등한 수준이며, 한 가지 차이점은 이득의 모두가 기부될 것이라는 것입니다.

  모든 이익이 기부된다는 것이 월드 벨리댄스데이 행사의 조건이기도 합니다. 그러므로, 제가 이 자선기금모음 행사를 준비하면서 비용을 최소화하기 위해 대부분의 일을 저 혼자서 하였으며 가능한 많은 기부금이 마련될 수 있도록 노력하고 있습니다.

  오리엔탈 하우스는 이 행사를 위한 장소로서 기부된 것이며, 그들의 관대함에 진심으로 감사 드립니다. 극장은 100명이 앉을 수 있으며, 워크샵 장소는 10-15명이 참석할 수 있는 크기입니다.

  RAK 2011행사는 한국인과 외국인, 워크샵과 공연이 연결되어 있으므로, 오리엔탈 하우스는 모든 티켓팅에 대해서 저 혼자 진행할 것을 요청했습니다. 제가 모든 티켓판매를 담당하고 있으므로, 모든 기금은 오리엔탈 하우스가 아닌, 저의 개인 은행계좌로 입금될 것입니다. 저는 원하시는 분들에 한해, 워크샵과 공연에서 모인 돈과 모든 비용에 대해, 그리고 어떤 단체로 기부되었는지 보고할 것입니다.

  행사에 기여하는 부분에 따라 댄서들의 이름은 “댄서 페이지”에 표시될 것입니다. 워크샵 강의와 공연을 하시는 댄서들의 이름이 먼저 목록에 있을 것이며, 공연만 하시는 댄서들의 이름이 그 다음에 표시될 것입니다. 그리고 그 뒤에 “한국 슈퍼스타즈 벨리댄스 공연”에서만 공연하시는 분들의 이름이 표시될 것입니다. 각각의 범주(카테고리)안에서는 댄서들의 영어이름 알파벳 순서로 나열됩니다.

  RAK 2011의 모든 공연자들과 워크샵 강사, 참여 학생들에게는 수료증이 수여될 것입니다. 수료증 수여는 각 공연과 워크샵 마지막에 진행될 것입니다.

  그리고 다시 한 번, RAK 2011에 참여하시는 여러분께 진심으로 감사 드립니다. 여러분의 너그러운 지지 덕분에 이 행사는 성공적으로 진행될 것이라고 믿습니다.
