Policies for users moderating comments on their posts
Printer-friendly version

As explained here, Koreabridge users can moderate comments from posts they create except for job ads and forum posts.

This post and several others since then explain the reasoning behind disabling comments on job ads.

To further clarify, I'd like to address the question that was raised here - Why can users delete comments on their own classified ads, but not on forum posts?

As a preface, all posts on the site need to abide by our posting policies (basically, don't be hateful or rude).

When someone creates a forum topic, it is an invitation to the community to participate in a discussion that will be permanently archived on the site. To pick and choose which opinions are allowed, seems counter to the spirit of an honest exchange of ideas.

Classified ads are temporary posts that are primarily about a transaction.  While I want visitors to be able to ask questions to the advertiser and perhaps offer some civil feedback concerning price, what too often happens in reality is a handful of users take it upon themselves to post comments that are nasty, insulting, and/or harrassing.  I have no problem with someone saying, "You can buy that same model now for 1/2 the price you're advertising".  I do have a problem with "You friggin' scumbag loser. Stop trying to cheat your fellow expats by selling a used widget - just give it away".  I am far more concerned about the tone of this website than providing a price comparison for every item offered in our classifieds.  I trust consumers to pursue their self-interests, and in the context of the Koreabridge Classifieds, I think the free market works pretty well. If something is overpriced, people won't buy it. I want people to feel safe advertising something on this site.  I recently saw a Facebook post from someone leaving Korea - it went something like this:

I am glad I never have to look at the awful Koreabridge expat website which is really just a site for boring, high and mighty, arrogant twats who are bitter and twisted about other expats and full of assumptions that their little life is the same as everyone elses experience in Korea.

While I hope that's not how everyone feels about this site, having seen some of the snarky comments that get posted here, I understand where that person is coming from.  Allowing users to delete comments on classified ads is intended to provide people with one layer of protection against the snarkiness. To those show will counter with "Yeah, but you're letting people get ripped off", see comments above about consumer self-interest and free market.

So you base a decision, on the opinion of someone leaving and that applies to everyone now. He may be right about boring and the tw-ts part. It was such a boring site , that he had to mention it, just before he left. Tells a story within a story, sounds bitter to me to. His life here was so fulfilling here, obviously so. That's why he stayed, right??

That is a very bizarre interpretation of what Jeff actually said. Perhaps you should read his post again more carefully.

Perhaps you should learn to read.

To be honest, if that punter felt that, so be it. I think it's (KB) rather dull now. Killing off the humor, banter , has meant the disappearance regular comment. Less humour from the likes of LBS, Paul, Darth, Tharp, Woodsman.

Come off of it, not everyone is so affected by this forum. If it is their life, then they are in trouble. I participate in doses from time to time. My posts usually relate to the community being ripped off.

The problem Jeff has, is that if he over-moderates, eventually you lose your regulars. Then, you have no forums at all and eventually no business. There's a lot of competition. I'll bet that people enjoy the banter, and some even chat about it over a beer or 10. Jeff is a top bloke, and he's right, it did get out of hand three or four years ago. In fact, it was berserk, but he was away.

Frankly , it's rare to see an interesting topic or argument on here nowadays. No offense meant, but like a bar, chase out the locals and you only have seasonal trade. Eventually you have no business at all mate. This is what happens when the PC brigade get run of the show, they make everything sober and boring. Then , we are all left eating Tofu and banana leaf soup.

Speaking of the PC brigade: these are the same liberals who vote for gay rates, marriage, Obama and loans to Greece. Well look at the World economy now. Global warming my buttocks!! We'll have to got to meetings, watch our P & Q's, taxed for farting, no alcohol too. However, if it affects my land price or my surfing, we can't have windmills.

Jeff, in the spirit of bashing the PC brigade, protecting freedoms, how about a bit of laissez -faire for a change. If the post is out of order: highlight the post, or even categorize post- green for safe, orange for mild and red for danger. The poster could choose this, or you. No one has to actually click on them and read them. It is free will. You allow the sellers to do so, why not us.

Angel,

I agree with much of what you have just said, but then in our last argument(conversation), you did nothing but make attack after attack rather than make any point of relevance.

I am all for freedom of speech(as you proclaim to be), so why should they let you delete posts you don't like or cannot successfully argue? lame...

After reading several threads you have been on, I noticed a trend. You get frustrated, you stop discussing, and you turn towards personal insults. Mayhaps people do not "discuss" with you cause their is no discussion, just one individual ranting to anyone who will listen.

More of your one-sided, no insight, just "punting mate" style and sour attitude toward anyone who does not agree with you.

When I was about 5 , I laid one off in the tub. Try as I might, I couldn't escape that fearful floater. De Ja vu. Now, I fully appreciate the lesson provided that day, truly schooled. If a terd you don't succeed, move to SK.

So just so everyone is clear.

You took a dump in the tub when you were 5 and it has driven you to move to South Korea because you were never successful back in the UK?

Wow, Angel, good job opening up. you have made some real progress today...

There's no point interacting with Angel. Just ignore him, don't respond to his posts and he might go away.

Comedians and almost cyber-stalkers- what else do you guys enjoy? How about stick to topics, and I don't answer to you(x10). I am obviously not on your intellectual parapets. So don't engage me, bother with my topics and we'll be OK. If my topics aren't interesting, my opinions so different, then stay way from them. Bloody hell, it's not rocket science.

This is classic- you are so self involved.

You post on an open web-board and tell others not to add comments or express their opinions on your threads...

I am sitting at my computer just laughing. Your posts have gone from stupid and sad, to stupid, sad and hilarious.

Self involved for sure- since when has anyone been anything else. Good, you have been entertained, you've had your fun, be a good lad and get some pleasure from your life. In fairness, if the Manager didn't delete the delete option, we wouldn't be talking. I'd have been happy with my one entry rant!!!!! I guess you are the one with the buddy boner here! Do you really have a beef with me? We can always meet and sort this out with a kiss.

Re: Policies for users moderating comments on their posts

The manager still has the moderate/ban user option and I'm exercising it now. Angel, I'm turning your posting permissions off until Monday.  I'm going to be  mostly off the grid until then and just don't have the time or energy to deal with this right now.

Not sure why I allowed things to get as out of hand as I did with this thread and the University Position- part dieux one, but thanks for reminding me why I am so glad that we tightened moderation policies.  I don't miss the kind of garbage at all!

While you and a few others love this stuff and find it funny, it's just not what this site is about and frankly it turns off more people than it attracts.  As you mentioned, there are plenty of other sites where you can engage in this kind of  'banter'.  Enjoy your weekend there.

I'll post a follow-up next week and plan to webcast a long overdue Koreabridge 'town hall' meeting soon, during which we can address moderation policies among other things.

JL out.

In response to your banning him, I will take the advice of others and ignore him going forward, I know that I am not blameless, though I did not take personal pot shots...

Unless of course their is a thread that I can add to the "discussion" and not the distraction...
