Gangwon KOTESOL'ers!

It’s time for our final chaptermeeting of the year, and a great chance to catch-up with everyone before the winter hits us and sends us shivering under our electric blankets for a couple of months.

This year’s December meeting will be held at Gangneung-Wonju National University in Gangeung on Saturday, December 1. The meeting will begin at 2:00pm and run through to 4:30pm.

In keeping with the change in educational policy in Korea, the main theme of the meeting will be on language production with two great presentations focusing on NEAT (The National English Aptitude Test) and vocabulary learning.

We are lucky to have the KOTESOL Busan Chapter President, Brad Serl, travelling all the way up the east coast to join us on the day, where he will give a presentation that explores NEAT and the transition from the current KSAT in an interactive manner. This presentation will be of particular interest to all those that are currently public school and academy teachers, as well as pre-service teachers and those that teach freshmen English at the university level. Simply put, NEAT is going affect English education in Korea, so come along and see what light Brad can shed on the matter.

Our second presentation of the day will be given by Kwandong University’s Scott Kim and will focus on aspects of vocabulary learning. Scott’s presentation will delve into how we can alter the learning behaviour of Korean EFL students and assist them in training their ears with respect to listening and speaking. This presentation should provide elements of practicality to teachers across all levels when we consider that vocabulary is an integral element to language acquisition. As has been said by many, ‘without words, we cannot communicate’.

After our two featured presentations we will have an open floor for a brief idea exchange, where our members will have a chance to share any activities that they are especially proud of over the last few months. Post-idea exchange, things will be wrapped up with a few closing words before heading off for a social event that may or may not involve beer.

We hope that you can join us on Saturday, December 1 at 2:00pm in Room 424 of Building C9 of Gangneung-Wonju National University, Gangneung Campus.

Hope to see you in Gangneung!
