Many wind up creating a life around that decision. That's today's conversation taking place in Asia… now. College loan debt Unfortunately, many from the United States, and other nations, complete their university programs with a lot more than just a degree. They also are saddled with a large student debt and a bleak job market. Then there's the fact that many experience wanderlust, a desire to get up, move about, and see the world. Came for a year, made a life Today on the program, I've invited Victor Boggio to have an informal chat about his experiences as an English Teacher in Japan. Victor is a popular Japan-based YouTube video blogger and co-host of the very popular net-cast 2.5 Oyajis. He originally went to Japan for a single year to try his hand at teaching. Ultimately, he fell in love with that career path and now owns and operates his own school. Why do South Korea and Japan rank poorly on English indices? According to Education First's English Proficiency Index, Japan ranks right in the middle of surveyed countries, despite its education efforts. In fact, since the last survey, South Korea's and Japan's rankings have gone down, despite their incredible investment to improve the English speaking ability of its citizens. China's has actually increased a little, but taking the top spots in Asia are Singapore and Malaysia - presumably greatly influenced by their colonial past. It might surprise many, but Indonesia is sandwiched between South Korea and Japan in the rankings. Given these three countries with a substantially less GDP rank as high or higher than Japan and South Korea, what does says about where those residents place the value of learning it on their priority list?
