This week on Explore your Environment, Jo and I headed down to Tongdosa, one of the three crown jewel temples of Korea. Getting there from Seoul is easy. First hop on a train to Busan and then make your way to Nopo Station. If you're not traveling by train, but by bus, when you reach Busan, you're already at Nopo Station, the sight of the Intercity and Express Bus Terminal. From there, purchase a bus ticket to Tongdosa. At the time of our visit it was W2,200 (US$1.96) with buses leaving about every 20 minutes throughout the day. The first stop on the route is Tongdosa, so get off and start walking up the street. It will take about 30 minutes to get to the temple complex, but don't let that discourage you. Tongdosa was founded in 646 by Precept Master Jajang. He traveled from China with several relics from the Buddha. When this temple was built, there were no statues of the Buddha constructed, because Precept Master Jajang enshrined the relics he carried with him on the hallowed grounds.
