Over the last few years Extensive reading has gained a lot of traction with research showing that for students to be good readers they need to read easy material in large quantities. The bridge between Extensive reading and Intensive reading is the concept of developing reading fluency. Research shows that reading fluency (reading quickly) leads to comprehension in Intensive reading and better scores on standard tests. Reading fluency also increases the amount of graded readers a student can read over a semester increasing all the benefits related to Extensive Reading. This presentation will examine some of the physiological processes involved with reading and what teaching strategies and activities teachers can use in class to develop reading fluency. Presentation goals Explain some of the processes behind reading and justify the activities presented. Look at some of the materials already available on the market to develop reading fluency. Describe some activities teachers can use in class to develop reading fluency. Noel Woodward has been teaching in Korea for over ten years at all levels and ages of students.
