Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. The two distinct areas of the city - the old and new towns - were inscribed to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1995. The historic old town is a classic example of European city planning and is dominated by a castle and abbeys. The new town influenced urban planning across Europe.
