Haeundae Beach in October

It was lovely day, at Haeundae Beach in mid-October, when a bunch of fish decided to commit suicide by jumping out of the water onto the sand....strange! But, we did our best to help some kids try to save their lives before a flock of seagulls finished them off.

cycling as a contraceptive

The benefits from cycling grow and grow.  If you are male and worried about getting your significant other pregnant, cycle more.

…researchers noticed “about a two-fold increased risk of ‘low sperm concentration’ and ‘low total motile sperm’” among men who biked for at least five hours per week compared to men who did not exercise regularly.

It’s not known why the counts were lower among serious cyclists. But Wise said the harmful effects could be the result of “mechanical trauma or a prolonged increase in core scrotal temperature.”

A Lady ...

When it is cold outside,
a lady should always have something warm and strong on hand for her guests.

After a little mulled wine,
she prepares for the party ...

... where she listens to the boys,
and always has something interesting to say.

Drinking the boys under the table, I'd say that's also in the description.

You make me smile

Dear Circumstances,

Thanks for bringing me to the awareness that you are far beyond control. That words unspoken just fester, and that love learned and lost is still worth holding on to. It feels ten fold to know that unbearable sadness is no longer there, and you have forgiven all that was mistaken.  It makes everything so much better just to talk to you about the semi ordinary life we both lead continents apart.

Sincerely,

britt

DECEMBER

Not quite a tangerine in my opinion, but on every corner in the city. At least 10 for less than 2 dollars, and they are so delicious when cold!

Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul

Terribly cold in Seoul this past weekend.

We explored alleys, shops, and galleries. This was the special find for me that day. It was packed high with paper and books.

Eric and I made the very large mistake of going to the Cat Cafe. These cats had more love then they could handle, and therefore were somewhat robotic and disenchanted by everything we did.

My favorite thing in Seoul was Wagwak

Da-in did her thing at Super Sketch, which was pretty rad.

Lhasa played. It was grand. Here is an incredible video of them playing awhile back at the Sound Picnic.

Destination: Taereung and the Royal Tomb Museum (Seoul)

In my continuing quest to see every Joseon Dynasty tomb in Korea, I found my way up to Taereung - one of the few within Seoul city proper, and the place where a shiny Royal Tomb Museum can be toured as well.

Opened on December 24, 2009, the Royal Tomb Museum details the procedures of a State Funeral, a large amount of information about how the tombs were constructed, and how they were cared for after construction.

Showing just one stage of the funerary procession, the 바린 (ba-rin) is when the coffin of the deceased king heads to the royal tomb.

A cutaway showing the myriad layers and elements of the tomb itself. A computer animation showed the step-by-step process, with subtitles in both Korean and English - quite helpful.

Some stone replicas of the various civil and military officials from King Taejo's tomb and Taereung.

While the tomb museum is a nice diversion, I came to see the tomb itself. You're already through the gate whether you visit museum or tomb first - that 1,000 won admission fee gets you into both.

The road to the tomb - and a tree-filled area is relaxing. If you work at the nearby Seoul Women's University, this would be a great place for a lunch break in the warmer months.

The 정자각 (jeong-ja-gak) with the tomb in the background.

The tomb of Queen Munjeong itself is off-limits, as usual - heck, even the grass is off-limits, and there's plenty of signs around to remind you of that.

As a relaxing, easy-to-reach place with a brand-spanking-new museum, it's hard to fault it as a tourist destination. Having only a small view of the tomb itself is a little annoying, but that's fairly typical for Joseon Dynasty tombs.

Ratings (out of 5 taeguks): How do I rate destinations?
Ease to arrive:

Foreigner-friendly:

Convenience facilities:

Worth the visit:

Directions: take line 6 of the Seoul subway system to Hwarangdae station. Take exit 1 to street level, then catch bus 202, 1225, 1155, or 1156 to Taereung. If you're listening to the audio announcements on the bus, it'll actually be the second Taereung stop you'll hear - the first one is the Taereung international shooting range.

1,000 won admission gets you in to both the museum and the tomb. Open 9am - 6:30pm (March-October) and 9am - 5:30pm (November-February); ticketing closes an hour before closing time. Closed on Mondays.

Paradise Hunter - Closing In

Back in September, my friend Choppa79 messaged me on YouTube about a contest. He said, "Steve, you'd be perfect for this."

You know what? He's right. I love traveling. In fact, my audio book is about a grand excursion through many of America's National Parks should be released next year. Paradise Hunter really would be a dream job for me. Teaming up with producers to travel the globe, filming the sights, sounds, and cultures of the world's most amazing places is what I want to do. It's more than a dream. It's a calling.

I have been completely blown away by the rallying of support for me to get this job. People have been Re-tweeting the links, sharing on FaceBook, making videos, etc. I've been truly touched by your support.

Now, as time closes in, I need it more than ever. There's just over 36 hours left in the round and I'm not in the top five for votes. I'm hoping that with some last minute voting and sharing, we can show the producers that I have what it takes to host the show and draw in an international audience. If you could please vote and share the link with as many people as possible over the next two days, I'd really appreciate it.

Once voting closes, we'll have to wait until January 4th to see if I make it to the finals. I know I can with your support. Thanks!

Now that the studio space is equipped with a coffee machine and heater, all is well.
