Synchronized Luminosity

Say hello to John & Elisabeth Buck

“Vast displays of fireflies glowing in unison along tidal rivers had been reported in Southeast Asia and other regions for centuries, but had not been recorded or closely studied. In the 1960’s, Dr. Buck, assisted by his wife, Elisabeth, and others, set out to make the first measurements of the phenomenon, by attaching a series of light meters to an electrocardiogram machine.”

After listening to Emergence by Radio Lab, I had to know more about this duo. I wanted to know about the harmony existing in these fireflies that they decided to blink at the same time. I am so fascinated by scientists that dedicate their entire lives to the research to answer these type of questions. I do not think I have that discipline or type of intelligence to be able to do so. But since a lot of my artistic endeavors come from the ideas given to me by nature, I feel I must continually explore the questions that I have.

Back to John & Elisabeth. I admire couples who attack life together. Who creatively and intellectually are able to go hand in hand throughout their lives, loving what they do, and loving one another. An ideal relationship is one that meets all the needs we have as humans. We have created more needs over the years, but don’t think it’s impossible, for it is not.
