Korean American plans to release ‘Dokdo Wine’

Dokdo Wine
A winery called Dokdo Wine, located in Napa Valley and owned by Korean American Jae-hyun Ahn(who is also a dentist), is set to release their new wine ‘799-805,’ named after Dokdo Island’s postal code, in mid November, reports Arirang News.

According to Dokdo Wine’s website, the new wine was created to draw people away from the controversial debate over which country (South Korea or Japan) owns the rocky islets, and to bring people back to the original delicacy and beauty of the island itself: “Instead of appreciating the beauty of Dokdo, the world has been too busy fighting over it . . . The island should not be fought over, it should be shared. We were inspired by this ideal while creating the wine. We wanted to create something that represented Dokdo and our passion towards it.”

Some may see the creation of ‘799-805’ as a statement that Dokdo truly belongs to the nation of South Korea, but regardless of Dokdo Wine’s true intention, there have been definite efforts to call up on the pride of Dokdo belonging to South Korea. Recently, the renowned fashion designer Lee Young-hee held the first ever fashion show on Dokdo Island to celebrate Dokdo Day (Oct. 25). Her show pieces ranged from modernized to traditional hanboks emphasizing the infusion of Korean culture into the island. Read more about the event here.
