December 2010 events

Author's note: There's bound to be updates to this month's events - keep checking back for more information and new events! If you have an event you'd like to plug, comment on this post with all the details. Please follow a few guidelines for the maximum benefit.

November 26 - December 12: The Seoul Players presents 'Wintertime' - an "energetic comedy about the miracle of love." Written by Charles Mee, you'll meet Ariel and Jonathan, along with Maria, Francois and Frank, and a slew of other fantastically funny characters
to discuss love, its expectations and its complications. Recommended for viewers 15 and up for some nudity. For more information, check out their website. Head up to Roofers in Itaewon for these shows in December:

Friday, December 3 @ 8pm
Saturday, December 4 @ 8pm
Sunday, December 5 @ 5:00pm
Friday, December 10 @ 8pm
Saturday, December 11 @ 8pm
Sunday, December 12 @ 5:00pm

December 2-6: The Seoul Design Festival - claiming to be for designers of the world, this seems less for the public at large and more for the designers to interact with each other. Of course, fashionistas will want to check out the official website for more information.

December 4: Rubber Soul is back - raising money for the Hillcrest AIDS center and the RYE School Initiative in Uganda. 15,000 won gets you into 4 Hongdae clubs and hours of live music. Everything from post-punk to indie to hardcore is represented. Formerly known as Rubber Seoul, the event has now gone international - an event was recently held in Vancouver and Syndey. For more information, check out the official blog or the Facebook page for the Seoul event.

December 7-12: The Korea Design Fair - who cares if the Seoul Design Fair was mere months ago? What about the Seoul Design Festival held mere days ago? The country's ready for another event of almost an identical name. COEX mall, hall D (3rd floor). The website has an English section, but as of this posting date it's still stuck in last year.

December 10 (DEADLINE): If you're a foreigner in Korea who likes testing - and keeping - free stuff, head over to SBC Event on Facebook. This is the Small and Medium Business Corporation in Korea, and they're looking for people to test out new stuff. These aren't samples of candy bars here - diet shoes and a rolling bag are recent examples. Products are free to test out, although you'll need to specifically apply for each product you're interested in testing. You'll also need to post a product review on your Facebook or blog (be sure to remember a disclaimer). Yeah, you'll be helping with their marketing efforts - and getting some free swag for keeps. Testing goes from December 13th to January 7th. For more information, check out the aforementioned Facebook page.

December 11: SANTA-CON! If seeing foreigner zombies roam the streets of Hongdae and the subway station was your thing, you're gonna love seeing foreigner deck the halls in Santa suits. Last year's event was lots of fun, and I'm likely to head there again this year. Coming in a Santa suit is not an absolute requirement, but you're trying to get into the spirit of things here, aren't you?! Expect plenty of alcohol, plenty of foreigners, and plenty of good times. See this Facebook page for details, and http://www.santarchy.com for the official site.

December 11: If you're more interested in the outdoors and the mountain, come celebrate the annual commemoration of United Nations International Mountains Day. Plenty of presentations and a good crowd of peak-lovin’ folks will come to downtown Seoul. For more info as it develops, watch the KMPL site (Korean Mountain Preservation League) for further announcements.

December 11: If you changed your mind about partying, but don't want to do it in a Santa suit, head down to Project Kyungnidan, a new grouping of four venues not far from Noksapyeong station. You may know this area as the HBC, but it's a little ways from there. Check out the Facebook page for more, but it'll definitely be a break from your typical night out at Hongdae or Itaewon.

December 15-18: Siggraph Asia 2010 - don't let the name distract you from all the cool, geeky stuff happening. Brought to you by the Association of Computing Machinery, expect a Computer Animation Festival, courses in related fields, and a trade exhibition to pick up the latest tech stuff. Check out SIGGRAPH' Asia's official website for the full story in excellent English.

December 18: Handel's Messiah, performed by a choir of 60 expats and Koreans and produced by the Camarata Music Company. It's a great way to get into the holiday spirit. 10,000 won in advance, 15,000 won at the door of Chungdong First Methodist Church (near City Hall station in Seoul). The performance starts at 7:30pm, but get there early for first-come, first served seats. For more information, check out the event's Facebook page.

December 21: Some good news to get around Korea: the Gyeongchun line will connect Seoul to Chuncheon in Gangwon-do. While there's some fun stuff to see in Chuncheon, the point is that it makes traveling east that much easier - no planning in advance is necessary to catch the subway, of course. The Joongang Daily gave us the date, but Wikipedia gives the rest of the story.

December 29: Some more great news about getting around Seoul - the AREX (Airport Railroad EXpress) will officially open the whole way - from Incheon International Airport to Seoul Station. This is great news if you're looking to get into Seoul - or out of Seoul - in a hurry. Since Seoul Station serves as a connection to three Seoul subway lines and dozens of Seoul city buses - not to mention everywhere else in the country via the train station - this is great news for getting around the country. Just remember - DO NOT take the express train. Why? 5,300 won will get you from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station (or vice versa) in 53 minutes; the express train costs 13,300 won and gets you there in 43 minutes - you save a whole 10 minutes for that extra 8,000 won, and it comes less often. Note that the Gongdeok station won't be open until the end of 2011, and the Hongik University transfer won't be open until 2012.
