Playing Jangu-gu ( The 163rd monthly event )
We would like to invite you to our monthly event.
We want to help foreigners to know about Korean culture.
This month we will introduce "Jang-gu(hourglass drum)", a Korean traditional instruments.
The performance of janggu falls on percussive virtuosity.
The Janggu has a wooden body with leather drumheads. The instrument is played by striking the drumheads with two sticks, one in each hand.
The left side is struck with a mallet called gung chae, while the right side is struck with a thin bamboo stick called yul chae.
The janggu is mostly used in nong-ak (farmers' music) and also as accompaniment to folk songs and japka (semi-art songs).
The sound of the janggu is reminiscent of rain.
