Japan has a long history of grand castle building, and Himeji-jo is considered one of the finest remaining examples of such architecture. The current structure dates to about the year 1600, but the site was under construction and in use in some form as far back as 1333. Himeji-jo was inscribed the UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1993.
