Abe to call election? HK Students to protest UK next. Korean students take most important exam.

Thursday, November 13, 2014 The conservative Japanese Senkei newspaper has reported Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will postpone a planned tax increase and call a general election for December. This is despite the Prime Minister saying he hasn’t decided on either matter. Some speculate the desire to call for the election would be to sure up support for Abe ahead of taking the unpopular steps of restarting nuclear reactors around the nation. As Hong Kong authorities are poised to take definitive efforts to clear the streets, student protesters are looking at what may be a Hail Mary pass, and are organizing a plan to occupy roads surrounding the city's British consulate. Anna-Kate Choi, the coordinator for the Occupy British Consulate group said, “We are angry at the way that the British government has for many years denied that China has actually breached the declaration by interfering with Hong Kong politics. They have the responsibility to make sure that the joint declaration has been implemented properly and that democracy and the high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong has been protected.” Posters for the British consulate occupation bear the slogan: "China breaches the joint declaration, UK government respond now" with the pro-democracy movement's umbrella symbol emblazoned with the British flag. Today marks the most important examination in South Korea: the Suneung, or college entrance exam. It literally has the power to shape one’s future. How students perform on this singular examination determines what universities they’ll be able to enter when school starts next year. The test is so important, planes are re-routed during the test period, businesses open later, and police are on stand-by to ensure students can get to test locations on time. Unfortunately, because of the importance placed on this test, students who don’t perform well sometimes fall into a downward spiral of despair. Perhaps the lesson many students fail to learn is that while this test is extremely important, one can’t let a single event define your life.
