Street Art

I recently went to Tongyeong and ventured around this awesome neighborhood full of art called Dongpirang. It’s comparable to the art neighborhood in Busan, but different in some great ways. This neighborhood was a the top of a hill with great murals winding around most of the buildings.  I love public art spaces, they really do enhance both the neighborhood and the city, and Dongpirang was really great.

While walking up to the main neighborhood there is this awesome board game mural, that is one of my favorites.  It features the famous Turtle Ship commander Admiral Yi (more on him another time) and other  landmarks in the area.

I find it really interesting what kinds of artistic styles are embraced by different cultures.  Even with such global communication there is some art that is obviously Korean,

whereas others could fit in seamlessly onto a wall almost anywhere the world.

Also this may just be the teacher in me, but some subject matters are universal.

Some I still don’t get.

Why are the bees so angry? Why do they have runny noses? Is it supposed to be honey? What is Admiral Yi carrying?

And to make myself feel better after that weird mural, I follow-up with one of my favorite pieces in the neighborhood.  I love the whole ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ feel of it with the little guys climbing by his ear.  I also really like how it works the corners, from different angles, and as a whole.

Other paintings I just think look cool.

Dongpirang is a short walk from Tongyeong’s harbor and a cute place to take a stroll.  Plus at the top you are rewarded with a great view of the harbor.
