Shannon Kuhn’s Anchorage Food Mosaic Project Celebrates Community

Thanks to Shannon Kuhn, Anchorage is home to an exciting endeavor by the name of the Anchorage Food Mosaic Project. Inspired by the melting pot of ethnicities in her community, Kuhn founded this project last summer to provide a way for people to share their recipes and stories with each other. A firm believer in the power of food to bring people together, in a recent interview with KTUU-TV, Kuhn said, “Food is one way we can build community and really share cultures and celebrate with each other.”

The website reflects the diversity of the community, with submissions including Kenyan ugali, an African twist on cereal, to Chinese caribou and shrimp shu mai (picture below). Along with the recipes, a short little story about the person and culture behind it are also included. In the future, the recipe blog will include tips about local ingredient sourcing, and showcase photos of all contributors.

Despite launching the project last year, Kuhn already has big dreams for it, hoping that it will effectively combine food and cultural learning, and really encapsulate its tagline: “Building community through our cultural foods, one bite at a time.”
