August 2011 events

Author’s note: There’s bound to be updates to this month’s events – keep checking back for more information and new events! If you have an event you’d like to plug, comment on this post or contact me with all the details. Please follow a few guidelines for the maximum benefit.

July 30 – August 7: Gangjin Celadon Festival - considered one of the top 2 festivals in Korea by Visit Korea, and a pretty interactive festival to boot. It’s quite some distance from Seoul, so make it part of a weekend trip to the area. Last year was pretty fun.

August 1-8: Busan Sea Festival – learn more at Korea4expats.

August 5-7: Pentaport – to live music lovers in Korea, this is one of the biggest concerts of the year. KORN, NO BRAIN, Garion, PLAIN WHITE T’S, Schizo, vassline, CHK CHK CHK, Prana(내귀에 도청장치), IDIOTAPE, NEON TREES, Galaxy Express, THE GEEKS, MAMAS GUN, Vidulgi Ooyoo, Whangboryung=SmackSoft, JOE BROOKS, 13 STEPS. Learn more at http://ticket.interpark.com or www.pentaportrock.com – Dream Park in Incheon.

August 6: Shakespeare in Seoul, anyone? SSC will be holding a launch party at Berlin Cafe in Itaewon beginning at 6:00pm.  The evening includes live music from original acts Carl Anton and Jennifer Waeshcher as well as raffles prizes from numerous businesses in the Itaewon area.   Help support expat artists while enjoying the terrace and classy 1920′s atmosphere that Berlin has to offer. For more information, check out their Facebook page or email info AT seoulshakespeare.com to be put on their mailing list.

August 9: get past the homeless drunks and enjoy the new “Culture Station, Seoul 284″. That’s the old Seoul Station building, complete with decades of history and years of renovation. It should now look as it did when it was first opened in 1925. No specific event has been planned to my knowledge, but the Korea Herald has a recent story on the place.

August 12-August 28: Seoul Fringe Festival – the nascent counter-culture has gone mainstream, and the festival offers something a little more every year. The English-language website also gets a little better every year – in any case, the Hongdae area comes alive during the day as well as night.

August 13 (1:30-6:30pm): Little Travellers Photo Scavenger Hunt! Last year was plenty of fun, and it’s for a great cause as well. Get together your team of 4 (or register as an individual and they’ll put you in a team) and pay 15,000 won per person. This time around, you’ll need two cameras per team. Start up at City Hall (Seoul’s line 1, exit 5). Learn more on the Facebook event page.
