April 2011 events

Author’s note: There’s bound to be updates to this month’s events – keep checking back for more information and new events! If you have an event you’d like to plug, comment on this post or contact me with all the details. Please follow a few guidelines for the maximum benefit.

April 2nd: pick something up from the First Saturday Flea Market, put on by the Seorae Global Village Center. If you have something to sell, registration is free, but must be done by the DAY BEFORE. Call 02-2155-8915 or email [email protected] to learn more.

April 2nd (9:30pm-???): What’s this about a roller derby? Strap on your skates, or just watch the girls that do – Dolce Bar across the street from Cheonan station will feature the first roller derby (to my knowledge) in Korea. The derby’s debut starts what looks to be an interesting sport to introduce to the locals. By train: Cheonan Train Station Exit 1, cross the street underground to the GS25. Go up the hill 20M from GS25, but before the IBK bank. More information at the Facebook event page, or learn about the girls on their blog at http://rokdrockinandrollin.blogspot.com. No word on cover (probably none), but bring cash to cover your drinks. Sorry boys, but only girls will be doing the skating.

April 2nd: if you’d rather take in some excellent indie music – and support musicians in the process – check out Rocky Mountain Tavern to see UR Seoul, Kachisan, The 401′s, and Zee. Come and join us for our Spring Fundraiser at Rocky Mountain Tavern in Itaewon. A great night with great rock music, jello shots, raffle (win some wine, dinners at restaurants, cd’s, and a nintendo Wii and/or ipod, and more!), date auction, awesome bands, and more! CMC’s outreach program focuses on buying and acquiring instruments, and providing orphanage and low-income children free music lessons! Orphanage and low-income children also attend CMC’s concerts free of charge to further expand of CMC’s mission. It is the mission of CMC to make music accessible to anyone and everyone! Proceeds from the fundraiser go to further support our outreach program, and to further support future concerts! More information at the Facebook event page, or learn about Camarata Music Company at http://www.camaratamusic.com/.

April 2 (8pm): Vagina Monologues – round 1! Performed in Korean and English, this fundraising play will raise money and spread awareness to end violence against women and girls. 10,000 won gets you in, and all proceeds will be donated to The House of Sharing in Korea. All performances will be in English. In a move that seems more incongruous than ironic, band ‘Total @ssholes’ will take the band after the Vagina Monologues. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.

April 3 (2pm): Vagina Monologues – Roofers in Seoul – matinee performance. See previous listing for more details.

April 6 – May 29: Cirque du Soleil Varekei has finally made its way to Seoul after having toured much of the rest of the world – it opened in Montreal in 2002, although it’s just now coming to Asia. If you’ve ever wanted to feel awed and amazed without attempting illegal narcotics, this is easily the best way to do it. While not worth the price of admission alone, Irina Naumenko bends her way into some extraordinary positions to ‘save’ our man Icarus. Cirque du Soleil takes the best forms of human talent, harnesses them into a spectacle, and leaves an unforgettable night permanently embedded in your memory. Jamsil Sports Complex, 60,000 – 220,000 won a seat. For more information, check out http://www.varekai.co.kr/sub_6_4.php or call Interpark at 02-1544-1555.

April 9-10: don’t ever complain about not having enough vaginas in your life. A second performance of the Vagina Monologues – part of the V-Day Seoul group – will be bilingual. That’s right, Eve Ensler’s award-winning play gets performed in Korean and English for vagina lovers or owners all around Korea. Sat. April 9th, at 3PM & 7PM & Sun. April 10th, at 3PM @ SOWOL ART HALL, Wangsimni Station (lines 2, 5, and the Jungang line) Email name, phone number, preferred date & number of tickets to [email protected]. 20,000 for adults, with all proceeds going to KUMFA (Korean Unwed Mothers & Family Association). For more information, see the Facebook event page, or vdayseoul.com.

April 9-17: Actors without Bard’ers presents MACBETH - whether you half-read the Cliffs Notes in high school or performed it in college, it’s a classic through and through. AWB’s interpretation, set in a post-apocalyptic, war ravaged wasteland, leaves characters not only fighting to rise in rank, but for their very survival. It’s a world stretched to the very edge of breaking, leaving us to ask: to what ends will we travel to stand at the top? Changu Theater – Myeongdong Station exit 10. E-mail [email protected] for reservations (15,000 a ticket)

Performances:

April 9 – 7pm (party follows the performance)

April 10 – 3pm

April 16 – 3pm and 7pm (party follows the 7pm performance)

April 17 – 3pm – Talkback to follow the performance -   All welcome to share thoughts, questions, criticisms with the director, cast, and designers.
