There are actually TWO separate ~거든 forms. The most common (and the one you should definitely know first) is ~거든(요), which is used when explaining. The second is ~거든 (without 요), which is an advanced level form used to mean “if.” I taught both forms in my most recent live stream, and also how ~거든 is different from ~(으)면.
