Introduction

Gwangju Biennale was founded in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Korea’s Independence, and to celebrate the Year of Art in Korea. This international art exhibition is now held every two years to look back on Korea’s art culture and to understand the future direction in art.
The very first Biennale in 1995 from Sept. 20 – Nov. 20 featured 92 artists from around the globe and 249 special guests. More than 1.6 million art lovers came to see the exhibition. The Biennale has always shown contemporary art under a popular theme along with many special guest exhibitions and various performances.

About the Biennale: The Biennale will show fast growing interest in Asian art culture, Asia’s new cities and culture trends. This Biennale will attempt to express Asia’s energy and vision through the exhibitions, and will also hold a discussion forum on the world and Gwangju’s Biennale, and the world’s perspective on contemporary art under the title of Asia Art.
All throughout the Biennale, from the eve to the finale, various promotional events, and performances will be held, including hands-on programs about artwork, and many daytime and nighttime events. In addition, separately prepared exhibitions will feature Korean and other Asian young artists.
The Biennale is also hosting a collaborative research, workshop, and artwork production between the world’s major cities to highlight the serious efforts involved in art.

Biennale Highlights: Running for 66 days, Gwangju Biennale is quite grand in scale, so it is recommended that you prepare an itinerary when visiting the Biennale. A one-day trip from Seoul is not enough time to see everything. Instead, a 2-3 days stay is most ideal.
You can enjoy the various exhibitions during the daytime, and in the evenings, you can participate in the variety of fun performances. Performances include jazz music, dancing, and many other quality entertainments. The programs vary daily, so it's best to stay at least a couple of day in order to thoroughly enjoy the Biennale.
