Why Daegu?  “The Ugly Duckling”
How Daegu was chosen for such a spectacular international event is a heart moving story.   It tells much about the city, heart, and soul of the Korean people, more specifically, the Daegu people.  First, unlike her more popular sisters, Seoul or Busan, most people have never heard of Daegu.  In addition, Daegu has been known as a country bumpkin city “10 years behind” (technologically, socially, economically, etc)…kind of like “The Ugly Duckling.”

Events of such magnitude as the IAAF World Championships are in extremely high demand, and often times, popular well known cities win the bidding wars.  It would seem impossible at first, but Daegu was deeply inspired after hosting the 2003 22nd Summer Universiade.  International Olympic Committee and IAAF Council Member, President Count Jacques Rogge, gave Daegu high praise for her athletic facilites and operation capabilities.  This encouragement sparked great hope and faith for Daegu’s IAAF dream.

In January 2004, with great pride and anticipation, Daegu submitted a letter of intent to host the 2009 IAAF.   Eight other countries including Berlin also applied, but due to intense bidding concerns, the IAAF Council requested that Daegu and some other countries withdraw.  Because the 2007 IAAF would already be held in an Asian country (Osaka), Daegu saw even slimmer chances of being nominated for 2009.  Daegu withdrew, but this first courageous attempt won governmental support for the next application.  In April 2004, with the help of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Korea, Korea Association of Athletics Federations, Korea Olympics Committee, and other agencies, Daegu became one of nine cities to apply for the 2011 IAAF.  In December 2006, selected nominees for the 2011 and 2013 IAAF included Brisbane, Moscow, Barcelona, and Gotenberg; however, implications of a non-European country would leave only Daegu or Brisbane.

In 2005, excited Daegu used her IAAF nominee position to launch athletic awareness and status in Korea and the rest of Asia with a slogan, “Carrying the world baton for world athletics.”  To attract local support, Daegu held the Colorful Daegu Pre-championships Meeting.

However, the IAAF was still very concerned about Daegu’s ability to attract a mass audience and support system.  In response, Daegu resolved to obtain 600,000 petitions from potential participants during a two month period (Dec. 15, 2006 – Feb.10, 2007).  In less than a month (Jan. 10, 2007), Daegu exceeded the goal and received 650,000 signatures.  Eventually,  800,000 signatures were placed in a book, published, and sent to the IAAF Evaluation Team in efforts to prove Daegu’s ability to attract adequate support.

As all cities nominated were inspected for hosting capabilities and competition facilities, the IAAF Evaluation Team reviewed Daegu on Feb. 22, 2007.  Successful meetings and investigations along with friendly and hopeful citizen support helped Daegu’s winning bid.  In Mombasa, Republic of Kenya, on March 27, 2007, the 2011 IAAF host would be announced at 3pm.  Three minutes before 3pm, IAAF President Lamine Diack announced “Daegu.”

Unity.  Daegu could not have won without the whole nation coming together with one heart, mind, and purpose.  Daegu won over Moscow, Brisbane, and Barcelona after one bid when cities such as Berlin bid three times.  For a nation with such a tumultuous history and a city as Daegu, it is a huge stepping stone and a great honor.
