Is this a joke, being offered less than 25% of a month wage for a week

I am looking for a substitute teacher 12/17-12/21. The hours are from 1:00-6:00 pm Monday to Thursday and 2:00-6:00 Friday. This means you can sleep in and still be home for dinner.  The classes will be very easy to teach. All the material will be prepared and the largest class has only 6 students. This is a great chance to make some extra money before Christmas. I would like to have someone for the whole week. The salary is 450,000 won.

This person wants an F-Visa only, for 450, wow, how things have changed...

including rent and the average 2.2 million a month contract this ad should be for a minimum 700, never mind the airfare, bonus, and national pension.

Why can we no longer leave comments on the original post?

This is a way too common ad...
People forget and/or ignore the fact that their Pension, Housing, Airfair and Bonus are all part of their salary... The person needing the sub needs to make up the difference that the school doesn't pay.

Best thing to do is explain this to them after they want you...

Re: Is this a joke, being offered less than 25% of a month ...

So an F2 (or anyone for that matter) should be okay making roughly 22,500 an hour for subbing for someone illegally outside of their contract when the standard rate for private jobs is basically double that? That's a joke.

Realize that anytime you're heading off to teach another person's job, there's a risk--a remote one, but it's there--that it will get back to your school or immigration. If taking that risk is worth it for you to make less than what you normally make hourly, so be it, but in all honesty, I hope the person posting this ad has a hell of a time finding someone to do his work for him.

And to the guy saying this is an example of "Negotiating 101": You may be right, but if this is the general consensus among people here, we're a pretty miserly lot.

Re: Is this a joke, being offered less than 25% of a month ...

There have always been low-ball pay offers.  I can't think of a single period during my eight+ years in Korea when there weren't low-ball pay offers.  Good offers get snapped up quickly--lousy offers get posted on the internet.  The real mystery is why anyone would find this noteworthy or surprising.

Re: Is this a joke, being offered less than 25% of a month ...

errr. because they are only asking for a 5 hour day and 4 on a Friday. Most people in hogwans work 7-9hour days for their 2.2million won plus benefits. F visas often have it too easy.

I guess your jobs sucks, This is a misconception. Plenty of jobs have block schedules, the schedule is not that uncommon, but the pays is super low.

F-2's have it easy, clearly you don't know any, they mostly work more hours and catch crappy side jobs to pay the bills. Some do better than others but most I know don't make a "ton" of money, but have higher bills.

"Most"...

Find  it interesting cause we could no longer post on the job add itself.

Its called supply and demand . Nowadays it seems there are more teachers then jobs . Regardless of the teachers visa e 2 f2 or just tourist visa . In Winter Vacation some University English teachers will look for Hangwon jobs too . Its just business .If someone wants to work for 20000 an hour that is their choice .However doing this certainly undercuts the market . Its kind of dumping in the market . Instead of the products being dumped on the market its teachers .

Bet you thought that was funny...

Anyhoo, there are not more teachers, the schools are forced to deal with people who will not pay the proper ammount and then when push comes to shove, they make a co-teacher do the work(has happend to me, and pretty much everyone I know, who has been here a while) or the school roles the dice and takes an E-2 Teacher cause they have NO IDEA how to find a replacment.

Untill people wake up, their will continue to be lower wages now then there where 10-20 or even more years ago...
