Clothes/Shopping thread

Ok, so Winter is coming fast, and I need some more clothes but I'm not so familiar with where to shop for what.

So can we make a general thread for shops people like, where they are, and what you can get there.  Especially if you know of good Korean shops/independent shops/student fashion/boutique or specialist clothing places.  Like good places for jeans, suits, fancy dress - anything really!

So some general western-ish shops I know:

Shinsegae and Lotte department stores for 'designer' labels that are mostly way over priced.

UNIQLO (Usually in Lotte Department)- good for plain basics and underwear.  Not so good for trendy clothes and they aren't particularly high quality.

American Apparel (Nampo-dong) - also good for basics, better made than UNIQLO, but more pricey.

ZARA (Centrum City) - Nice for classy well fitting clothes, got great winter coats, but pretty expensive.  Also has the catalogue with prices online.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

Neato Burrito idea, but is there any chance that anybody has a good idea of where to go for bigger sizes? I am an American XL, but I am just a little too big for most Korean clothes. Any suggestions? What I really need is a winter coat. I thought I would buy one and have it sent from the states.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

Nampodong LOTTE Department Store: ZARA, MANGO, GAP. UNIQLO, Marks and Spencer's,

CENTUM Sinsegae, LOTTE: ZARA, MANGO, GAP. UNIQLO,

Kyungsung (Daeyeon dong) many boutiques and vintage and second hand shops in streets in front of Pukyoung and Kynugsung unis,

ONLINE: www.forever21.co.kr, (sometimes have US XL size but usually L is largest, and bras go up to size 36D) the size measurements are shown in inches and cm. Very reasonably priced!

My best friend is US size XL She can find some things in Forever 21 and H&M (Seoul) but usually has to get stuff sent from home. I know GAP and Old Navy deliver to Korea.

ZARA, MANGO UNIQLO and M&S generally only stock up to UK size 12 (I think that's US size 8/10???)

Jeans: there is a vintage jeans shop in Kyungsung area,

Costumes and fancy dress: http://www.cospreshop.net/ and.gmarket. Cospre has a shop on the main street in front of Kyungsung across from the Fire station on the second floor. you can rent costumes there.

Happy Shopping!

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

If you buy any from high retail stores for your garments in Korea, they are all made in China, Hong Kong, or some similar surrounding Asian countries with enormous amount of trading tax paid to get reached to the final price here.  Sometimes, American or European brands are more costly than when you purchase them in the USA.
On the other hand, I would recommend shop online for bonded clothing 보세 의류 which is about wearable products in between from manufactures place and sales place prior to getting to the USA.  They mostly hold brand name tags and labels in English such as DKNY, Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagles, or Banana Rep. e.t.c.  It sometimes takes longer than other extreme retailing stores to order, but I think it's worthy to purchase same products which will go to America with no commercialized price included for TV/magazine ads or transportation and store rent.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

the problem with buying clothes in korea, for me, has always been the prices.  everything is so extremely expensive that i usually end up ordering clothes online, having them shipped to my parents, and then get it from them.  of course the size issues, too.  the brand name stuff is ok but to buy a shirt from one of those independent designers is impossible for me...im 6-2 180, u.s. size medium.  but regardless, Migliore in Seomyon has tons of little booths that carry nothing but those independent designed clothes that you mentioned.  I don't know if you are male or female, but there are a bunch of little clothes shop hidden in the back alleys of the PNU area as well.  All these places share one tendency though, and that is they rip people off.  Plan a trip to Seoul and check out Dongdaemun and Itaewon if you're looking to shop in Korea...that would be my suggestion.

These UK based websites/shops all ship to South Korea for less than 20, 000 won. If you keep your purchases under 150 000 won, including delivery, then you won't have to pay any customs fees.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

If you like to shop on a couturier's design online, one of my friends  http://www.jaeyoonjeong.com/ in East/West Village NYC. Or, shop nicolemiller.com as a Philadelphia based design line.  I would hopefully set my own in two or possibly three years; plus many more from haute couture lines on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré/George V/Montaigne for ysl.com chanel.com givenchy.fr lanvin.fr johngalliano.com; or on duty free shops at Lotte or Shilla in Busan/Seoul or online stores.  What I can find some of their 보세의류 would be some samples made for reserved customers or buyers.  Because a winter garment lasts life time, it deserves a good deal of investment.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

How about some REALLY GOOD online shopping sites. I'm looking for really good denim and quality/unique clothing.

What are some designers people are into?

What sites do you shop on?

There are some nice/unique boutique shops all around Nampo and Seomyeon if you are dedicated for a shopping journey.  I like roaming around the thrift market in Nampo a lot.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

Sa-rah. Where is the Marks&Spencers in Lotte Nampodong? I searched that store from top to bottom several times and can't find it. An Internet search tells me that there is one in Hyundai dept. store near Seomyeon, but not in Lotte Nampo.

Thanks in advance.

I can't recommend this strongly enough but www.landsend.com.

keep your orders under 100 and shipping is only 28 dollars.  and never pay tarrifs, you receive it in about 3 weeks. They often send emails about 30 percent off sales. I always buy sale items and usually end up getting a few outfits for under 100 and the product is good.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

I agree with the insane mark-up on a lot of clothing/shoes in Korea.  I buy most of what I need on Ebay.

Re: Clothes/Shopping thread

Sorry for being six years late...

Although for those who are looking at this thread in 2016 and later, I blog about being a local in South Korea. Now, I commute in between Hong Kong, South Korea and America.

I made a list of local online clothing sites locals use. I believe these are English-friendly but, if you have any trouble, ask me anything or email me! ( \^-^)/
