Apartment

Hey, my husband and I are looking for jobs in Busan. Would we be able to get an apartment together and if so, would it be bigger than a single apartment. Also, can anyone recommend some recruiters?

Thanks

Re: Apartment
Depends on the school. I've heard of both ends of the scale from box rooms to decent size places. I can't be sure, but if a school is advertising for a couple they should also provide accommodation suitable for a couple. But then again this is Korea and they way things should be often aren't. Otherwise they are saving the cost of the rent of one apartment which is a considerable amount. In my first contract I shared a house with another teacher, we had two bedrooms one small and one large and seperate living room and kitchen. I think you should be looking for at least that.

Re: Apartment

Justine, you don't want to be sharing a house with another foreigner that you don't know. They might be a heavy smoker or drinker or both or a slob or god knows. University days are over. You go with a hogwan, you don't know what you get. I've heard stories about housing here that would make the roach inn look like the ritz.

I'd go the EPIK route like I said on the other thread. They can get you in schools close by or together if at all possible. Housing is usually decent(it's gov't) and close to school.

 ps...I'm not a recruiter for EPIK or am I a head-hunter.

Re: Apartment
some schools give you a single but you can ask for two rooms then if they want to be cheap. i would never take a job though if they are cheap because it makes for a long year. if you are abroad ask someone to check out the place for you first. also, if it is not at least 20pyong, it will be too small. most teachers' placed are around 15. some are bigger but on average, that is normal. it is one room and that is it. if you are a couple you can ask for two rooms-meaning one bedroom and another common area but apartments here are not the same as back home so be careful. dont trust what they tell you-i will tell you that. good luck.

Re: Apartment

LBS when I referred to sharing with a foreigner it was just an example to show that some schools do have decent sized apartments for 2 people that hopefully her and her husband could move into.

By the way I was the heavy smoking drunken slob back then. But my room mate was 10 times worse. Those were fun days!

Re: Apartment

Under the same roof can still be a nightmare. No matter how far the bedrooms are apart. Sharing a kitchen, or worse a toilet can be the most discusting joint venture a person can ever experience.

I guess if you are an easy going person, it's easy enough but I'm a neat freak, sleeping with the enemy(julia roberts) towel scene kind of anal. I would go ballistic if a roomate even left a coffee spoon in the sink or a crumb on the counter.

Matt, heavy smoking drunken slob? I don't think so,  past or present, you are a classy cat.

Re: Apartment

I posted this on the other discussion but maybe I can get more opinions here-

What I dont like about EPIK is that you dont find out where you are going to be placed until you actually arrive in the country. We only want to be placed in Jangsan, Haeundae so I dont want to actually risk getting to Korea to find out I am somewhere Rural. Also, isnt it less money, bigger classes? I realise however, that its also more holidays and more regulated.

I applied through EPIK last year and they turned me down, saying that my references wernt long enough. That was completely unfair because no one specified how long they had to be. That REALLY put me off.

Re: Apartment
epik sucks. you are right-they tell you last second where you are going. hours and vacation rules have been tightened to. not the place to be. id rather work a hagwon like lee said from 3-9. at least you can have a life and choose where you live and work. good luck.
