People have awful taste in food? Taco Bell has or used to have meat that's graded lower than dog food.
I can't say I've had a great Western style meal in Korea. Most of the time it has been adequate but nothing to go out of my way for or pay the (usually) ridiculous prices. The "Mexican" food in Korea is really Tex Mex and not very good.
Taco Bell; The Mexican food equivalent of White Castle, where the food comes out as quick as it goes in. Damn I could go for a 'slider' right about now!!
It's the same for all the fast food restaurants, we know the food is crap. No one goes to McDonalds for a 'healthy' salad...you know what you are getting yourself into.
About twice a year I make the trip down to Texas Street to have a 'heart attack' burger. The bun is even greasy.....I can feel my arteries harden just looking at it...yum yum. Screw white castle, Texas Steet is the king of the 'slider'.
Yeah, I can agree with that. Although to be honest, I have not had ANY American fast food restaurants in my 5 months here in Korea, except for Lotteria, which isn't even an American brand. 김밥나라/김밥천국/축석김밥 are just as fast and cheap, and much healthier.
Rice has to be better than processed hamburgers and such but I don't think that typical Korean gongji bap white rice is that good for you actually. It's nothing more than filler right people?
Worst Taco Salad
On the Border Grande Taco Salad with Ground Beef and Chipotle Honey Mustard Dressing
1,690 calories
124 g fat (27 g saturated)
2,570 mg sodium
CALORIE EQUIVALENT: 8 packs of M&Ms!
Think of this instead as the world’s
largest taco, cradled by an oversize fried tortilla trough. This Grande salad is gigantic, and comes with as many calories as in THREE Whoppers.
Brown rice is very good for you, but yeah, white rice has been processed with the husk removed (which gets rid of a lot of nutrients). Not the most nutritious thing. I gave up fast food a few years ago, but when I did eat it, I liked going to Taco Bell.
Re: Why are peole so excited about a Taco Bell opening in Seoul?
Just to underscore my OP, here is a link that tells everyone that Taco Bell puts sand in their food:

Government Officials were worried about the influence it would have on the North Koreans because of their slogan, "Make a Run for the Border!"
That's why it took so long!!!

Wow, thanks for resurrecting this thread 2 months later to make such an insightful comment.
In other news the little Mexican place literally across the road from taco bell is amazingly good and very cheap.

Getting back to why it is popular:
People, for once in Korea, have the ability to control and understand why and when they get diarrhea.
