Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

My flatmate is determined to go to korea or japan and teach. He did a couple years at uni so his idea is that if he can get a fake degree notorized he'll be fine...

I'm trying to explain that even if he got in his employers would catch him out!

What would happen if a person managed to get a fake degree aposilled and get their E2? How long until they were caught out?

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

Chances are he will never be found out.

The apostille thing is a joke. The people verifying documents back in the US don't have the competence to know what each and every degree looks like. There are about 3,000 colleges and universities in the US alone.

Let's say you live in California. You go on-line, find an image, and make a degree from a university in Connecticut, let's say Yale (since that is the school that got this whole apostille thing going). You take it to the notary in CA. She doesn't know what a real Yale degree looks like and she stamps it. Your friend has only written an affidavit that it is real. The notary cannot make that determination. It goes up to the Secretary of State's office for the apostille. The clerk there sees the affidavit, sees the notary stamp, maybe you write and sign a new affidavit, and then you get the apostille. The clerks and officers at Korean Immigration Service or in the Ministry of Labor don't know the difference either. This is apostille business is not a genuine fail-safe against fake degrees.

Faking the transcripts is another problem. That's much, much more difficult, but with a decent internet connection and a little money, you can buy transcript stationary for your university of choice. I don't know how to do it personally, but I know of people who have bought degrees that came complete with official degree and transcripts, including a fake phone number that the prospective employer can call to verify attendence, grades, etc. It's a relatively decent business. You figure that a clerk in a university office isn't getting paid much more than 30-40K a year. If she agrees to sneak transcript paper out of the office, or to make a fake degree, she can suppliment her income nicely.

So, anyway, I don't think he'll get caught. If he does, chances are the school won't tell anyone because they don't want to look foolish. They'll let his contract expire and then he moves on to the next place because he'll already have his stuff on file for ten years. On the other hand, if the school is not afraid to lose face and they turn him in, then he'll get deported and never come to Korea again.

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

Thanks for the reply fella, but you're kind of encouraging him... DAMN! I want him to give up this idea.

I'm just worried about him going to jail or something.

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

If he gets caught he will do jail time... They have cracked down on forgeries after they had some serious forgeries found out a while back.

Just google it~

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

The days of working here are long gone! Number one they have huge files of what genuine gegrees look like, even if he could pull that off it has to be notorized by yhe school. Even if he could pull that off. I think it would really be how long other teachers caught on.

You might eplain to him the ramifications of being deported which are numerous including very likely bye bye passport depending on nation. At the least the big DEPORTED stamp makes it worthless anyway.

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

Dearest Kiwimchi, as I and many others on Daves ESL have told you, it is a bad idea. Now you are talking about your 'flatmate' trying to use a fake degree but you have the same username that you have on Daves. The posts about being traced through your IP address etc were not without truth. What you are trying to do reflects badly on the rest of us foreigners who are teaching here and when you are caught we all get a bad name. But  it's you who will get deported. Is there anyway you can get your girlfriend to consider teaching in China? You will have better luck there. Otherwise as has been previously stated, don't worry about your girlfriend while she's in Korea, we'll take care of her!

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

go somewhere else, korea is not what it used to be. and given the nature of the home grown korean nationals who forge their own degrees, theses, scientific data, conduct accounting fraud, its big ass double standard that they get slaps on the wrist, and expats get sacked, jailed or deported.

korea is NOT worth it anymore. jumping through hoops at its extreme just to make a $2000 dollar a month paycheck and not pay rent. been there done that, and moved on. my advice, korea is an utter waste of time, and not worth the headache, or looking over ones shoulder.

Re: Fake degree notorized/aposilled?

Getting paperwork notorized/aposilled makes the document legal doesn't it? The thing I'd be worried about is not only getting in trouble overseas, but if you get in trouble then your consulate will most likely be informed of why, and then when they find you've legalised a false document then you'll e in trouble at home too. This will most likey lead to a criminal record in 2 countries. I think it's widely agreed upon that Korea just simply isn't worth it. In fact, nowhere is.
