Cell phones and transferring and all that

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping theres someone wo knows the cell phone biz over here well enough to give me some info about unlocking phones and transferring.

1. Is it possible to deregister my smart phone from my current contract and to link a different phone to the contract instead (then sell the smart phone - or give it to someone else to register with their own number?)

2. If you transfer your contract to someone else, is it possible to keep your number? (And how does that work - is it as simple as going to the store together and just changing the info on the system?)

Thanks to anyone who answers! :)

Re: Cell phones and transferring and all that

1.  You can as long as the phone is paid for in full and your obligation for the length of the contract has been met.  Uusally, unless you choose otherwise, the price of the phone is tied into your bill on what the Koreans call (할부) which pretty much means installments.  Also, I'm sure you got your phone at a discounted price against the actual value for choosing a certain plan and signing a onctract.  This is why all your obligations must be met before you can do anything.

2.  If you want to keep your number you can but again, you're going to have to meet all your obligations then transfer.  I could be wrong on this, but as far as I know (this was the  case two years ago when I last did a contract) T or SK Telecom was the only company that would do a contract with a foreigner.  I was turned away at KT (Show) and LG (Oz).  So, there may not be another carrier to transfer to.  But in any case, to port the number, you'll need to meet your obligations.
