What kind of job could I get with the qualifications I have?

Hi all,

I have been seriously considering going to South Korea for a year or two after a mate of mine told me that I could do really well there with my qualifications.

I have a BA, an MA and am in the process of acquiring an MSc; I also have a CELTA certificate and experience teaching in other countries.

He told me I could get a job at a uni working less than 20 hours a week with large amount of holiday time to boot.

How true is this? and what kind of job could I get with my qualifications?

Thank you

Re: What kind of job could I get with the qualifications I have?

University jobs are pretty much as described, but just because you have some good qualifications it doesn't necessary mean that you will walk into one straight off the plane. Although I have heard of some cases where this has happened.

Competition for uni jobs is tough and a lot of hiring is by word of mouth and recommendations of people already working there. At the same time you will see ads on sites such as this, so keep your eyes peeled.

By the way you didn't say what subjects your Masters was in. An English or education related degree will give you a significant boost.

A BA, MA, MSc (if they are in English, Education, or Linguistics) with teaching experience and a CELTA makes you more qulaified than most people teaching in universities at the moment. However, as Mattsid said that doesn't necessarily mean you will walk straight into a uni job. Most unis would rather hire a less qualified person in country than "take a risk" with someone abroad. In addition, most employers are ignorant of CELTAs or any other Cambridge ESOL qualification. I'd add that a CELTA is a TESOL certificate on your resume otherwise they'll be clueless.

It's possible to get a job teaching 12 hours a week per semester with about 10 weeks holiday in summer and winter. But there are also other uni jobs that are not so good. It depends on the uni.

With those qualifications you should be applying to places such as the Busan University of Foreign Studies AKA PUFS and Wae-Dae.

Not only is it one of the best schools to work for in town in terms of reputation, they also have an apartment thrown in to boot.

They also have been known on several occasions of hiring 'straight off the boat' people with the correct qualifications.

Re: What kind of job could I get with the qualifications I have?

The days of flying in and getting a perfect job are over. Koreans want expats that have lived in korea for at least three years and have taught uni/college for that minimum. Our school now does not even hire unless you have an F2/F5 regardless of qualifications and this is Masan/Cheongwon region.

Things really haven't changed much WB for the private institutes that you once worked for. Hey, I could be totally wrong on the college gig part but if your resume is good enough, you look good enough I'm sure you might be able to sneak in somewhere in the country college scene. Good luck to you.
