TAB: Violent Hong Kong Protests, Yasukuni Visit Angers Many, Kpop Organizer Dies

October 20, 2014 The past four days have seen a flurry of activity in Hong Kong, as police have used what it calls minimum force to remove pro-democracy protestors from key locations. The police action began Friday morning and continued through the weekend. "We believe police have violated the principle of using minimum force to deal with peaceful demonstration," said James Hon, with the League in Defense of Hong Kong's Freedom. Despite this turn of events, Carrie Lam is scheduled to meet with protest groups on Tuesday. More than one hundred lawmakers visited Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine Friday. A cross-party group partook in the annual autumn celebration that saw additional lawmakers visit the shrine over the weekend. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not visit the shrine as he did in December, but did make a ritual offering of a potted tree. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chun-ying said Beijing was “firmly opposed” to both the visits and Abe’s donation, while South Korea called on Japan’s leadership to “abandon According to South Korean police, no safety personnel were on scene at a K-Pop concert this past Friday where 16 spectators fell through a metal grate and died. A 37-year-old official, only identified by his surname Oh, was in charge of the event, committed suicide the following morning. It’s the latest in a string of safety related accidents spanning more than 20 years, leading many to ask why can’t the nation can’t better enforce safety regulations.
