TAB: Nothing resolved in Hong Kong Talks, Australian IS Teen talks tough, Jeffery Folwe released

NOTES: http://asianewsweekly.net/2014/10/22/nothing-resolved-hong-kong-talks-au... October 22, 2014 The big news of the day, of course, was the highly anticipated talks between Hong Kong Officials and Student leaders. Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, Hong Kong's number two, represented government officials and pleaded with student protestors led by the Hong Kong Federation of Students, to work within the system. This was after Hong Kong’s Chief Executive CY Leung said he was open to creating a more democratic process for 2017, but the final candidate vetting would still remain with Beijing. He then turned around and angered many saying that truly open elections would give too much say to people making less than $1,800 a month. A video Tuesday showed a teenager who ran away from Australia to join the Islamic State. The 17-year-old, who calls himself "Abu Khaled", carried a rifle and directly addressed Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in the video. To end on a bit of a happier note, Lonely Planet has named Singapore the world's number one country to travel to in 2015. Finally, North Korea has released Jeffery Fowle, one of three Americans that were being detained. Officials say he’s now heading home. Little information has been released regarding the specifics.
