TAB: Hong Kong's Democratic Ultimatum and Indonesia's Fight for Democracy

NOTES: http://asianewsweekly.net/2014/10/01/hong-kongs-democratic-ultimatum-ind... Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 1st, 2014, and this is The Asia Brief. Occupy Central in Hong Kong continues, as the island celebrates China’s National Day. A gag order has been placed on Chinese media outlets, demonstrating Beijing’s concern and limiting the dissemination of information on the mainland. Prof Wang Qiang at the College of Armed Police, says armed riot police could be used to quell the demonstration, while Scott Harold of the RAND Corporation says that might not be the best course of action. Occupy Central has set today as the deadline for Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying does not meet their demands for democratic reform. Taking up the cause for their right to vote, Indonesian rights groups and citizens filed a legal challenge Monday to fight their parliament's decision to end direct elections for local leaders. The decision has been widely criticized for weakening the country's democracy. The Incheon Asian Games come to a close this weekend. Coming up at 12:01pm Seoul/Tokyo Time on Asian Now we take a look back over these games. It’s a roundtable discussion of the hits, misses, and if they’re truly worth it.
