These stories and more are on the November 28th edition of Asia News Weekly. Occupy Central is done While matters in Hong Kong remained relatively silent during the ASEAN and East Asian Summits, this week saw a flurry of activity when authorities stepped in to clear the streets. Asia News Weekly host Steve Miller takes you through the events and identifies the fractioning of the movement and why, if things don't change, the push for democracy will fail. The State of Asia Asia, as a whole boasts a population of over 4 billion - that’s more than half the world's population. To say there’s a lot going on in Asia would be an understatement. It's impossible to cover everything that takes place in the region, but bulleted updates across a variety of topics help paint a better picture of where the region is and headed. In the second segment of the podcast, the state of Asia is addressed. Host Steve Miller breaks down the latest economic, political, and regional news. Free Speech Cases in Asia While in many western nations, the right to free speech is protected, many countries in Asia have limits on how far it extends. This past week, China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam all provided examples of how precious a privilege it is to be able to speak one's mind. The segment provides updates on incarcerated journalists in the region, what rights groups are saying about it, and how Reporters Without Borders views the developments. North Korea threatens global war... again Kim Jong-un is nothing if not consistent. Hot on the heels of the UN Third Committee vote to refer him and the DPRK to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity, the young dictator retaliated in the most predictable of manners by threatening the world with nuclear war. For all of North Korea's bolstering, equal time should also be given to South Korea and the United States, for releasing equally antagonizing statements towards the DPRK that seem to beg Kim to continue down his current path. After reviewing the latest claims by Kim regarding possible nuclear tests, missiles launches, and wide spread destruction, Miller breaks down the updates and speculates how events will play out between now and when the United Nations Security Council votes on the ICC referral. The Weekly Brief The podcast concludes with a variety of stories from across the region. This week Miller highlights a strange new South Korea potato chip that seems to have captivate locals and expats alike. He also explains why newly elected Indonesian President Widodo is earning high praise for his down-to-earth methods. The segment also includes updates on volcanos that erupted in China and Japan, concern over the health of Thailand's King, and what must have been the largest stash of cash ever found in a “mattress."
