Hot off the heels of the APEC, ASEAN, East Asia, and G20 Summits, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was presented with some bad news. The nation slipped into a recession. Then there was the unpopular tax hike that was to be implemented next year. So what did Abe do? He decided to dissolve the lower house of the Diet and call a special election, two years ahead of schedule. Mr. Cucek returns to Asia Now for a lengthy conversation about what led up to the election being called, what the Prime Minister hopes to achieve with the vote, and if the tactic will pay off in the long-run. Please share your opinion on the election. Do you think the election will help or hurt Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s chances of carrying out his plans for Japan.
