Trail Mix Treats

These are similar to rice krispie treats, but I made them a bit healthier by using bran flakes and peanut butter instead of rice krispies and butter.  I had a plentiful amount of ingredients you would find in trail mix plus marshmallows that needed to be used soon, so I decided to make trail mix treats!

Trail Mix Treats

Servings: 9

Ingredients:

-1 package (150 g, 20-24) regular marshmallows

-2 Tbls peanut butter

-2 Tbls agave nectar or honey (I used agave)

-2 cups bran flakes, corn flakes or rice krispies (I used bran flakes, use corn flakes for gluten free)

-1/3 cup chopped almonds

-1/3 cup dried cherries or raisins, chopped in half (I used dried cherries)

-15 mini hard pretzels, broken into pieces (omit for gluten free)

-1/2 cup mini chocolate chips or m&ms, divided (I used chocolate chips)

Directions

1) Mix the cereal, nuts, dried fruit, pretzels and 1/3 of the chocolate in a bowl.  Set aside.

2) Put the peanut butter and agave/honey in a large pot, turn heat to low and melt slightly, add the marshmallows until they melt and are gooey.

2) Turn off the heat and add in the cereal mix.  Stir until well-combined.

3) Smash into a square container or dish.  Top with the remaining chocolate chips or m&ms by pushing them into the top slightly.

4) Cover the container and chill in the refrigerator until it hardens, about 1-2 hours.

5) Remove from the refrigerator, let set at room temperature for about 30 minutes, remove from the container and cut into 9 bars.  Store in a Ziploc bag or airtight container at room temperature.

Below are the ingredients used in this recipe.  The marshmallows, agave, chocolate chips, cereal, pretzels, peanut butter, and dried fruit can be found at most Home Plus stores.  The dried cherries, peanut butter, and pretzels can also be found at Costco.  Nuts and raisins can be found at any local mart.
