UP Student Bags Silver in Dokdo Essay Contest

A student of multimedia studies in the University of the Philippines Open University, Marie Alexis Miravite, and a student at Namsan Middle School in Changwon, Kim Mi-na, won silver in 2013 International Dokdo Essay Contest organized by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and The Korea Times. The theme of the essay was “Ten Truths about Dokdo — Not Known in Japan“. Over the years, there have beendisputes between Korea and Japan, as both countries lay claim to Dokdo.

Miravite and Kim will both receive a plaque and 500,000 KRW.

The gold prize winner is a senior at Yongsan International Schoolof Seoul, Yoon Hyun Jin (Esther). She will receive a plaque and 1.5 million KRW.

The bronze prize winners are Hong Chang-ki, a student at the Mander Portman Woodward Cambridge, Choi Seung-ho, a retired English teacher and Murray Barnett. Each of them will receive a plaque and 300, 000 KRW.

A gift certificate and 50, 000 KRW will be given to each writer of six outstanding essays namely: Bang Jun-suk, Kwon Sun-chang, Guangyu Qiao, Prasanna Bolla, Jeffrey Cahak and Park Eun-ji.

The winners’ essays will be posted on The Korea Times. They will also be published in a booklet and an e-book.
