On Saturday May 7, 2011 a small group of expats (about 30 people) gathered at Seomyeon Station in Busan and participated in a Flash Mob.

flash mob (or flash mob)[1] is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire.

Seomyeon Station was chosen simply because it is a busy area. Specifically, the flash mob was held underground just in front of the Lotte Department Store entrance. The day was particularly busy because it was the long weekend—— Thursday May 5 was Children’s Day and today, Saturday May 8, 2011, is Parents’ Day. In addition, Seomyeon Station was chosen because there is a large water fountain near the entrance and there were benches around it, so there were a lot of people already sitting right in front of the “action”.

The flash mob was organized fairly recently and that is why we didn’t do anything spectacular like a dance routine. However, some of the expats were creative with their pose. For example, some of my friends were pretending to fight; one was holding onto the other guy’s shirt while he was leaning of the water fountain for 5 minutes! I also saw a large group pretending to take a group shot. However, most of the expats were simply standing still. I think the event went well. The looks on some of the Korean peoples’ faces were priceless. A lot of the young spectators were either laughing or recording the event on their phones while the seniors just watched with the emotionless demeanor.

Personally, I didn’t participate because I was recording the event. I borrowed my friend’s camera and I shot the event in HD. It was my first time directing anything and using my friend’s camera really made me want to upgrade my 3 year old camera. Continuing, I think I captured some good shots of peoples’ reaction and expats pose, but there was a problem. I think I may have pressed a button by accident because everything was blurry! Oh well. My friend was also recording the event so stay tuned for the video! I had fun and that wasn’t the end of my day because right after the flash freeze I started my photography project!
