Places on a Map

For my Birthday, amongst a myriad of other awesome things, (including a beautiful, handmade necklace and a punk rock chick scrub brush) my friend Heather gave me some scraps of fabric.  They're really cool patterns, and I put two of the three of them to good use.

I've seen some of these handmade cloth state or country outlines both for sale, and as craft projects online and so I decided to channel my inner Martha and get crafty.  It was really quite easy and I think it turned out great.

Since Indiana and South Korea are about the same size I decided to do both and pair them together.  I had some picture frames given to me by friends in late February when they were leaving Korea, but they were too big for the fabric size, so I splurged and bought three new frames for less than 5 bucks at my favorite store.

Since I don't have a printer at home I traced map outlines from my computer screen onto paper and then used that as a template to trace or stencil the shape onto the fabric.  I used a colored pencil for the outline.  After I cut them, I sprayed them with hairspray so the edges wouldn't fray.

I really wanted to back them using maps- in case the travel theme was too subtle.  I also cut out two more of the pink flowers from the fabric I used for Indiana for city markers.  So now I've got a flower for Crown Point, and Busan (and a kind of unintentional one for my college town Bloomington).

I really love how it turned out.  Now both my home town and my current home hang above my bed.
