On my last trip to Seoul, I checked out Seoullo 7017 (서울로 7017) at sunset. It’s an elevated highway transformed into a public park for pedestrians. You don’t have to pay to walk around, just to be clear. 

Seoul is the name of the city and “lo” means “road” in Korean. The number is a nod to its origins; 70 for the year the overpass was first constructed and 17 for the year of the highway’s rebirth. The number 17 also refers to the number of pedestrian paths that make up Seoullo. Where cars once sped (or sat in traffic) along, people now walk! It’s pretty neat.

The new overpass has around 200 different types of greenery including all-year-round roses, apple trees, and pine trees. Scattered throughout the bridge are cafés and small shops. I highly recommend a wander; there’s lots to see and a few things to drink and eat along the way.
