If you’re in Osaka, I encourage you to go to Nara for a day-trip. After exiting Nara Station, you’ll find plenty of deer roaming the streets. Oh deer! There are vendors that sell deer biscuits, so only feed them that, but they’re wild animals so they’ll try eating everything (e.g. your food or maps).

The deer are tame and accustomed to tourists, but they get excited when it comes to eating so be warned! The deer can be aggressive, chase after you or nip at your shirt if you don’t feed them. It was easy to be in the middle of a large group of them.

Someone told me that it’s common for deer in Nara to bow in gratitude after feeding them. If you bow, which is a common custom here in Japan, they will imitate you. I don’t personally believe this, but I didn’t try too hard to make them bow. I was mostly running away from them so they didn’t bite at my clothes or things I was carrying.

While in Nara, we also checked out the Yoshikien Garden (吉城園) and Kōfuku-ji (興福寺) —both highly recommended!
