‘TV’ in Korean

The official word for TV in Korean is 텔레비전 (tellebijeon). Just like all over the world, it is more often referred to as 티비 (tibi). In written form, you could also write ‘TV’ and most of the time Koreans will understand. Pay special attention to the pronunciation in Korean.

Now, you may also be interested in knowing how to use it in a sentence, namely speaking how to say ‘turn the TV on’ in Korean. You can say it like this: 텔레비전을 켜다 (tellebijeoneul kyeoda).There’s no ‘v’ sound in Korean so it’s ‘bision’ instead of ‘vision’. Also, with the way Korean is constructed, the last syllable of ‘television’ (the ‘sion’ part) sounds more like you’re saying “John”. Although if you pay close attention to the English pronunciation, you’ll notice they’re more similar than you think.

Standard:

   (botong harue myeotsigan sicheonghaeyo?)

2. 우리는 텔레비전을 보기에는 너무 많은 시간을 보내고 있지 않을까요? → Don’t you think we are spending too much time watching TV?

   (urineun tellebijeoneul bogieneun neomu maneun siganeul bonaego itji aneulkkayo?)

3. 어제 우리 티비가 고장 나서 오늘 새로운 티비를 사러 가야해요. → Our TV broke yesterday, so we need to go buy a new one today.

   (eoje uri tibiga gojang naseo oneul saeroun tibireul sareo gayahaeyo.)


Informal:

1. 오늘밤에 텔레비전에서 뭘 볼까? → What should we watch on TV tonight?

   (oneulbame tellebijeoneseo mwol bolkka?)

2. 나는 쉬는날에 하루종일 누우면서 텔레비전 보는 것을 좋아해. → On my resting days I like to lay down while watching TV all day.

   (naneun swineunnare harujongil nuumyeonseo tellebijeon boneun geoseul joahae.)

3. 난 TV를 보기보다 책읽기를 좋아해. → I like reading books more than I like watching TV.

   (nan TVreul bogiboda chaegilgireul joahae.)

4. 저녁마다 과자를 먹고 티비를 보는 편이야. → I have a habit of eating snacks and watching TV every evening.

   (jeonyeongmada gwajareul meokgo TVreul boneun pyeoniya.)
