Haiti fundraisers

Although I'm not the most philanthropic guy in the world, I will take the time to spotlight some fundraising events - especially if they sound like fun events I'd go to anyway. The first three letters of 'fundraiser' are, well, 'fun'. See the Rubber Seoul event last fall as one noble example of fundraising and lots of fun.

This month features quite a few fundraisers for victims of the Haiti earthquake - full credit for the text below goes to the unofficial Seoul City Blog, kept by Shannon Heit. Check that out for the full list - a few highlights are below.

Friday Feb. 5th

Le Cabaret Noir Seduction and philanthropy, all in one night? This unique fundraiser will be held Friday, February 5th at Club Ta in Hongdae. According to co-organizer, Jerome Virnich, the event, which kicks off at 10pm, will feature “a dark, classic theme…complete with dancers, magicians, musicians, drag queens and killer emcees!” A 10,000 won cover will get you entrance and one free drink, but more importantly will be donated to Doctors without Borders, whose medical expertise is greatly needed in Haiti now. Virnich said that they chose the organization in order to help support an organization that is provided crtical care. “Basic health care is a human right neglected all too often in today’s world, even in 1st World countries. Doctors Without Borders is on the front lines doing something about it, and that deserves our support.” For more info about the event, visit their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=277786239921&index=1.

Friday, February 12th

Hands for Haiti Hands for Haiti is being co-organized by two expat volunteer groups, PLUR and Green Drinks Korea, with the help and cooperation of several businesses in Korea – namely Hongdae clubs Jane’s Groove, FF, and DGBD. The event will take place on Friday, February 12, 2010, kicking off at 9 pm. The cover charge of 10,000 KRW will get you admission into all three of the clubs, where an extensive line-up has been scheduled for your listening pleasure. 100% of the entrance cover will go directly to Save the Children’s Haiti Relief Fund and a portion of all drinks sold at DGBD and FF will also be donated. When asked why she chose Save the Children as the recipient organization, co-organizer Liz Oh pointed to its established history of work in Haiti. “Save the Children is an internationally-respected, non-religiously affiliated organization that has been operating in Haiti since 1978. They have existing programs and resources already on the ground so they can distribute aid quickly and efficiently.”
