Film Event: Transnational Korea in Queer Cinema

Great event coming up in October organized by my friend and Fulbright scholar Todd Henry. The day will focus on queer history through film from the 1950s to present.

The program starts out at 10 with an introduction by Professor Henry on the theme Film Making as History Making. This will be followed by a talk on the history of the Korean queer community from the 1990s to today (10:10-10:50), a question and answer session (10:50-11:30) and a lunch break at 11:30.

After lunch they will be showing Girl Princes at 1 pm followed by a discussion with the director and academics from Hanyang and Yonsei university focusing on queer life from the 1950s to 1960s. After the discussion, there will be a quick snack from 3:30 pm to 3:50.

The last part of the event will focus on queer history from the 1970s to the 1980s. The first hour will screen two Korean short films: 이발소 이씨 (Barber Lee?) and 올드랭사인 (Auld Lang Syne). The screenings will be followed by a discussion with the directors (권종권 and 소준문), Professor Henry, queer activist 투인 and Jungang University's 김경태.

If all of this academic bliss isn't enough of a reason to attend, the day ends with a wine party at 6 pm. Man, I wish I was in Seoul this October.

If you want to attend, the event is at Hanyang University's Library on the 2nd floor in the Seminar Room. Be there on October 11th a bit before 10 am.

The movies will have English subtitles and the discussions will be in Korean.
