Dear Korea #137: Popping Pills

Location:

First off, I apologize for not updating last week and for being a day late with this strip. A combination of bronchitis, very little sleep, and accidentally taking on another part time job on top of my already awkward schedule has apparently resulted in me failing at drawing comics. Here’s hoping all of that gets fixed soon.

As an American, I absolutely hate going to the doctor. Even if it’s quite affordable and actually not that terrible here in South Korea, hospital visits continue to be one of my least favorite things to take part in. Unfortunately, self-medicating doesn’t seem to be a huge thing here. Asking a pharmacist will sometimes help, but in most cases, you’re expected to hit up the nearest hospital for even the mildest symptoms. While that’s fine and dandy, I have yet to receive anything less than an obscene amount of medication each time I’ve forced myself to make that trip. Rather than trying to zero in on what may actually be wrong with me, I’m often told to take a ton of pills and return if none of them work. Considering how difficult it is for me to take pills (it’s hard not to gag every time), this equals lots of fun and days of not looking forward to meal times.

Oh! In case you didn’t notice, there is a small announcement attached to the bottom of the comic. Though it’s been a long time coming, there will finally be a Dear Korea book! Yay! Stay tuned for more details!

P.S. After getting lectured for months by my a good friend who has decided to work with me as my “Art Pimp”, I have put that old donate button back up.
