Daegu Chicken and Beer Festival 대구 치맥 페스티벌

There are countless festivals for every season in Korea, but some of them stand out more than others. When I first heard that there was a chicken and beer festival I knew I had to go! We only live an hour by train from Daegu so we decided to make the trek and meet up with a few friends that we don’t get to see very often! Actually this video is what sold me on going. They even had a theme song and dance! How can you resist a summer day with cold beer, fried chicken, and silly dances?!

It was a REALLY hot day and Daegu is known to be the hottest city in Korea, but there were lots of fans, hats, cold towels, and patbingsu to make it bearable. :P It was quite a walk from the subway station to the festival site. By the time we got there we were STARVING, and we actually didn’t take ONE picture of our chicken! We chose HwarHwar chicken, which ended up being a delicious choice. They had us (Evan, me, and 3 friends) film a promotional video for their business, and gave us a free patbingsu in exchange. Just one of the perks of being a waygook! ^^

After telling people about the festival, I realized there were still a few friends who don’t know what 치맥 Chi-maek is! In Korean they often shorten words and put them together to make a new word. It’s one of my favorite things about the language, because its just fun to say!^^ 치맥 is a mix of two words, chicken 치킨 and beer 맥주. Fun, right?!

There were so many chicken vendors, but the lines could still be really long!

Some chicken vendors set up elaborate stages and had games or entertainers to attract customers!

On the way home we took video of our train ride through the Korean countryside. It turned out quite beautiful. We even added music played by us on the guitar and ukulele. Enjoy!
