Andong Mask Festival 2011

Every year, a special event called Andong Mask Festival attract people like a bee from all over to this small town of Andong.
Local and foreigner swarm around carrying latest camera to capture today's event.
Special tour bus and van were arranged for this special 10-day festival.
Also, international performance were invited and one of it is my home country, Malaysia.

This event was held in two site, Hahoe Folk Village and Mask Dance Park.
The festival is one of the must-see festival if you happen to be in Korea.

Traditional Andong Mask Dance is the main performance that drives me here.
The dance drama is part of a shamanist ritual for the town's peace and prosperity.
Also, it's Korea's important intangible cultural asset #69

Several stages were being set up in the Mask Dance Park itself.
Each stage carry different performance.
To avoid confusion, make sure you go to the Information counter to get the schedule performance or download from the website

Rows of booth are being setup that sells traditional handcraft items.
There are even booth where you can design and make your own mask.
Different type of mask to create as there will even be mask competition.
Souvenirs and trinkets are being sell here too.

To enter festival is free, however to enter mask dance theater cost 7,000 won.
One tip is to buy earlier to avoid long queue or fully booked.
We were lucky to catch Hahoe Dance Mask and Malaysia performance with one entry.

 Dance From India

Finally, Hahoe Mask Dance.
The reason I came.

Guest were invited to dance together.

Now I understand why there are several expression being crafted in each wooden mask.
Each expression shows the ability to evoke fear and humor in ceremonial rites.
It makes me understand Korean culture better.
Truly amazing experience.
