Making Chuseok(Korean Thanksgiving Day) Foods

Songpyeon

Chuseok is also known as "Hangawi," which falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Lunar Calendar. It also marks the day when Koreans would thank their ancestors for the bountiful harvest and share the blessings with family members.

Songpyeon is a traditional Korean food made of glutinous rice. It is a variation of tteok(rice cake), consisting of small rice cakes traditionally eaten during the Korean autumn harvest festival, Chuseok. They have become a popular symbol of traditional Korean culture. Songpyeon are half-moon-shaped rice cakes that contain different kinds of sweet or semi-sweet fillings, such as sesame seeds and honey, sweet red bean paste, and chestnut paste steamed over a layer of pine needles, which give them the fragrant smell of fresh pine trees and help not to go bad. They were made into various shapes with the participation of family members and were often exchanged between neighbors. The earliest records of songpyeon date from the Goryeo period(11C-15C).

There are many traditional stories about Songpyeon perhaps because it is such a famous food of Chuseok. For example, it is said that if you make pretty Songpyeon, you will have pretty children and good-looking spouse in the future.

How To Make Songpyeon

Mix the rice powder with boiling water.

Knead and let the dough stand wrapped in a wet cloth for 30 minutes.

Make a ball out a small piece of the dough, shape it into a circle in the palm of your hand, fill with filling like steamed chestnuts and mold it into shape.

Spread pine needles on the bottom of the steamer and place the songpyeon on them. Steam for 40 minutes.

When the songpyeon is cooked, rinse and brush with sesame oil and salt.
