SUPER COLOR SUPER brings Max Tundra to Korea for the first time this October 12-15th, giving his Korean fans the chance to craze out to his twitchy, mind-boggling dance tracks. He’s guaranteed to make you move like you’re up against Neo Exdeath in a dance-off. The English multi-instrumentalist has recorded three albums for the tastemakers at Britain’s Domino Records, but he got his start at age fifteen when he began composing songs on the vintage video game-consul Commodore Amiga 500. And after nearly 15 years his songs still retain that sugar-high of adolescence, recalling video-game scores and TV theme songs that bounce along tirelessly, embedding themselves in the memory of even the most stubborn listener. When asked to describe the aim of his song, he insists he has the populous in mind, commenting, “It’s for singing and whistling along to. That’s what I’d like – to walk past a building site and hear builders whistling a song of mine which they’ve heard on Radio 1”

Jacobs has toured with club-favorites like Hot Chip and Junior Boys and is himself a consummate performer. Although his sound is dense and relies on prerecorded parts, he also plays many of the melodies himself, improvising and adding new wrinkles to otherwise-familiar songs. 요즘 하루가 멀다하고 후크송(Hook Song)이 쏟아지고 있다. 그런데 이 후크송은 귀를 단순하고 반복적인 음악에만 귀를 익숙하게 만들어 그 범위를 벗어난 새롭고 다양한 음악을 받아들이기 힘들게 만든다. 근래들어 국내에도 전자음악에 대한 인기가 부쩍 높아졌다고들하나 그 역시 단순하고 반복적인 룹(Loop)을 이용한 후크송의 범주에 속하는 곡들에게만 해당 될 뿐이다. 과학의 발달로 음악을 만들고 출력하는 기술은 발전했지만 정작 사람의 귀는 퇴보하는 이런 아이러니한 상황 속에 맥스 툰드라(Max Tundra)의 음악은 발달된 음악적 기술력을 가지고 귀를 총명하게 이끌어내는 독특한 존재감을 가지는 IDM이라고 설명 할 수 있다. 가상악기와 리얼악기를 넘나드는 구성과 실험적인 다양한 소스들을 결합하여 만든1집 ‘Some Best Friends You Turned Out to Be’과 2002년에 발표한 2집 ‘Mastered by Gut at the Exchange’은 각각 피치포크 평점 9.2, 9.3점을 받으며 평단과 매니아층의 열렬한 지지를 받았으며 전자음악의 새로운 지평을 열었다. 1집과 2집의 연이은 성공 이후 6년간의 공백을 가지고 차곡차곡 준비하여 발표한 3집 ‘Parallax Error Beheads You’는 전작들에 비해 단조롭고 이질적인 느낌을 주지만 그동안의 공백기가 무색할 정도의 퀄리티와 센스로 대중들까지 사로잡았다. 3장의 앨범으로 완벽하게 자신의 음악세계를 구축한 맥스 툰드라는 Franz Ferdinand, Pet Shop Boys등 유명 뮤지션들의 리믹스 작업을 하며 다시 한번 그 실력을 인증 받기도 했다. 노래가 어디로 어떻게 흘러가는지 종잡을 수 없지만 결코 빠져나오고 싶지 않은 미로 같은 음악이 바로 맥스툰드라만의 음악이다. 세상에서 가장 신나는 미로를 이번 SCS를 통해 내한공연에서 체험하길 바란다.
