Please join the 10 Magazine Book Club for our September meeting on Saturday 27th September. We will be joined by very special guest novelist Hwang Sok-yong, legendary author of several award winning & best selling books including 'The Shadow of Arms', 'The Old Garden', 'The Guest' & 'The Road to Sampo.'

UPDATE: This event will be guest moderated by Professor Charles Montgomery, lecturer at Dongguk University and creator of thewww.ktlit.com website.

Hwang was born in Hsinking (today Changchun) in 1943, Manchukuo, during the period of Japanese rule. He studied philosophy at Dongguk University. In 1964 he spent some time in prison and in 1969 served in the Korean military corps in Vietnam. He turned his experiences in Vietnam into a short story called “The Pagoda” in 1970, which won the daily newspaper Chosun Ilbo’s New Year prize, and launched his literary career. He published his debut novel ‘Mr. Han's Chronicle’ about a family separated by the Korean War in 1970. In 1974 he published a collection of short stories entitled ‘The Road to Sampo.’ He became widely known for his epic ‘Jang Gilsan’ which was serialised over 10 years in a Korean newspaper. In 1985 he published another award winning novel that drew on his experiences in Vietnam ‘The Shadow of Arms.’ Hwang published his next novel, ‘The Old Garden’, in 2000. ‘The Guest’ was published in 2002. Many of Hwang’s works have been translated and published in France, the US, Germany, Italy and Sweden; many of his translated works are available across 16 languages.

I hope you can all make it. I really look forward to seeing you there. I think it’s going to be a fantastic meeting.
