Life in Daegu

Guys,

99% I am moving to Daegu in August, for 1.5 year studies. I have some questions.

I wanna spend as much time as possible with locals, but I also wanna meet some internationals, so what would be the good place to find them? No idea how people get in touch in here. Facebook groups, some pubs, clubs?

I am interested in alternative culture, concerts, whatever not usuall. And I don't wanna spend my time in my room ;]

Also, how about prices of guitars in here? I wanna bring mine with me, but not sure about saftey of bringing it by plane, so maybe better buy in Daegu?

I am from Europe/Slovakia.

Re: Life in Daegu

so how about this:

do you recommend to bring Euros and change there, or take money from some ATM? or maybe open account there and insert euros/ send from EU account...

First month I am gonna need my own money, from 2nd I got scholarship

Re: Life in Daegu

Hi Conta,

I'm visiting this site for the first time in years and saw your post. I live in Daegu and play guitar. There's a whole street near downtown full of musical instrument shops, and in Seoul there's a massaive building full of shops dedicated to the same. I bought an Ibanez Jem for 1 million won, but their a plenty of cheaper guitars available and cheap practice amps as well if you're after an electric.

If you're studying at a uni, and I guess you are, then you'll meet dozens/hundreds of other foriegn students. I actually work at Keimyung University and have some involvement with international students as part of my job. We have just on 100 (not counting Chinese students, they're looked after by a different office) arriving later this month. And if you're in that group, you'll be well looked after by your Korean buddy and continuing international students. I'll dig up some Facebook links for you. Daegu isn't Seoul, but I've been happy here and the number of events/things to do has grown since I moved here.

You'll need some amount of cash when you first arrive. So I would either get a few days worth of cash either before you leave or at Incheon Airport when you arrive. There are plenty of exchange booths in the airport. If you are coming to Keimyung, your buddy will help you open an account on the day of the orientation or soon after. It's much more convenient having a local bank account.

Cheers and good luck with everything,

Peter

Re: Life in Daegu

Thanks for information!

I'll be at Daegu for 1.5 year, so i am looking for some cheaper [or used guitar], because I guess I wont be able to take it home anyway. Maybe some other student will have some.

I am going to be at Yeungjin College. I checked with them and we are gonna open account so I guess I'll take something from ATM and put into new Korean account.

Anyway, if you have some culture and other fun events and you don't mind me join from time to time, let me know ;]

Re: Life in Daegu

Instruments in Korea are quite cheap, locally made. Quality can be variable, so make sure you get a good idea of where you can find the good stuff, and stick to Japanese imports if necessary.
