Is this a bad situation or not??? please help. Re: Is this a bad situation or not??? please help. pieceofmeat
Korean students are USELESS at geography.  The vast majority of my students can't even name the capital of China.  People love to beat up Americans about being geography morons (and a lot are), but Koreans, with their supposed rigorous education cannot rank very high in this regard.

Is this a bad situation or not??? please help. Re: Is this a bad situation or not??? please help. lee-bum-suk

Are these franklin marshall students middle school aged? No, you aren't listening.

I'm not talking about university students or people of adult age. I'm talking about elem-middle schoolers who spit out Harvard on demand becuase they don't know of any other foreign school.

Hi Kite,

I am very upset to hear your situation. I have been through a very similar situation myself and it is terrible... I know! I would like to give you 3 pieces of advice stemming from my own personal experience here.

1- Don't count on the labor board to help you! I was owed ALOT of money from a previous hagwon and nothing came out of me contacting the Labor Board! If...

as far as koreans knowing only about harvard because of a tv show goes, i do not believe that one bit. .  harvard is well known among people who want to go to college for an english speaking education, period.  they know about plenty of other colleges and universities here, too.  it all depends on what kind of degree someone is seeking.  why, just this weekend i saw about...

Another thing, I did a romanized map of Korea draw and locate excercise with my university students yesterday and this morning.

They didn't even know where Jinju is: It one hour away!! URG!!! most couldn't locate Duk-do although they know it's theirs but they don't why of course, it just is. Captain Cook could have placed more correct answers on...

Then why do you keep responding? You are like a dog that just keeps barking even after getting newspapered.

Koreans for the most part don't know anything about foreign schools other than Harvard, another ivy league school or two and Oxford. What is your point? if any? other than slamming me, what is your argument?

That they do because they are...

The last few comments have had nothing to do with the original poster's questions.

So you didn't write this:

The only reason why Koreans ever mention Harvard is because there was a stupid drama dealing with a few Koreans going there. Like every other drama here all they ever did was sit and talk about food; simply pleasures for simple peoples. Oh..and the actors were pathetic, they couldn't spell Harvard none the less go there. Other than Harvard they don't...

Can we use Korean bank cards (ATM) in Japan? Re: Can we use Korean bank cards (ATM) in Japan? kam1nsk1
Took my KEB global card to philippines. It didn't work. Neither did my companions. tried at 4 different machines, all displaying the Visa and Plus signs, in an area only used by tourists (so the machines should have worked). WTF?

Yeh that sucks as well Paul, Im not Canadian but it reinforces my point that immigration everywhere is non-friendly nowadays.

hey turns. i hate to say it but canada is right up there with the US. the last time i went back it was with my korean fiance and were only going to my parents place and vancouver immigration took her aside and grilled her for 3 hours. she thought i was a pimp and she was a prostitutute. i finally got fed up and demanded they call my parents just to verify a simple story. welcome to canada!

Quote, Presume guilty prior to providing any stay visa stamp on top of an entry visa.

When nothing is on a passport as a laissez-passer, their regulations will not accommodate anyone's advantage.  I experienced a worse case than Joe's in Paris against terrorism.  Let us stop nagging about bad experience; get a lil positive.  What they do is...

Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Re: Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience turns26
Hey JK, That sucks about your experience but immigration on a global scale seems to be a lot tougher and 'less friendly' nowadays. I cannot say I have travelled everywhere in the World but i've been to quite a few places and by far the worst immigration is the US in my opinion. I've seen them flat out harrass non-English speakers whilst waiting myself. Even to a fluent English speaker like me...

Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Re: Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience joe kimchi

I probably should mention that I'm a retiree with a generous pension and don't have to work.

At first, I couldn't figure out why I was being asked for an ARC and to fill out a reentry permit when I'm on a tourist visa, and then I couldn't understand why I was beiing asked why do I need to come back to Korea again and being checked on for working illegally.

Thinking about it...

i think it is a perfect example of why korea is so well known as a tourist hotspot in the english speaking world.  nevermind the language barrier, the form is in english, too

So the kids you teach are all in middle school and applying to these places?

I teach middle schoolers privately woodsman!!!  I hope for their sake you don't teach them reading comprehension or they might just be stuck going wherever you went to school.

Once again LBS shows there is no limit to what he doesn't know. I'm teaching kids who are applying to Cal-Tech, Harvey Mudd, and Dartmouth. Why don't you try sticking to topics you know something about. We could all use the long silence from you.

JK,

I don't blame them, I hope they will get stricter, and get rid of all scam merchants working here(not you). Ones, who are working illegally and therefore, as a consequence, keeping all the Industry rates down.Go immigration, a good start, next for Hakwans.Keep it up!I don't understand why people think...

Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Re: Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience chinesewoman

Sorry to hear that.

My suggestion for foreigners (who can't speak Korean well) under a similar situation are:

1, Be very very polite and smile all the time (it doesn't matter how fake you look like), DO NOT argue or TRY to explain anything, cuz that won't work.

or 2, Act like you are very very vunerable and pissed (This really works for women, not sure it works for men or...

Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Re: Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Paul Gaasenbeek
and talking about the ferry terminal, i was exchanging money there one time and while getting processed, i decided to get more money exchanged. the woman got angry and said in korean, "this is why i hate foreigners." now remember, this is a bank at the 'international' ferry terminal. i called the manager over and he just laughed like what she said was cute. try saying that to a customer at a...

Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Re: Busan Ferry Terminal: Scary Experience Paul Gaasenbeek
sadly, normal bro. back in 2005 i wasnt even allowed to get a work visa because i had been here "too long" without a work visa. even though there was no evidence of me teaching illegally and i was actually wanting to get a e2 visa i was denied. so i went to ulsan and they gave me one. busan no, ulsan yes. crazy random stuff here just makes you wonder. in the end i worked in ulsan for 2 months and...

Is this a bad situation or not??? please help. Re: Is this a bad situation or not??? please help. helenreee

You teach at a hakwon in Korea, then show your business skill first to your guests in class.  The truth is that they will never be your students but possibly customers or rarely clients.  That hakwon manager eventually mentioned one of the ivy league colleges in the US, because it is not a college to him...
